Re:

Swissquote Adding Vanilla Options to Its Platform

Swissquote already offers listed options; its notable product development is an Options Strategy Builder for analysing multi-leg trades. Availability, fees, access and expiry treatment vary by Swissquote entity, so verify the rules for your account before trading.

Swissquote is not introducing listed options for the first time. Its platforms already provide access to exchange-traded stock, index and futures options. The identifiable new development is an Options Strategy Builder: a tool for assembling and analysing multi-leg positions such as straddles, strangles, vertical spreads, diagonal spreads and calendar spreads.

That distinction matters. A “plain vanilla” option is simply a conventional call or put, while the new builder is aimed at combining several option legs and displaying the resulting risk profile. Swissquote’s FY2025 product roadmap lists the feature as “OPTION BUILDER”, but does not give a public launch date.

What Swissquote is actually adding

Swissquote already lists options markets including EUREX, ISE, OPRA-linked US options and Cboe products. Its current product material refers to thousands of European and US options and futures. The platform also has an Option Chain for filtering contracts by maturity and strike, plus a Stress Test Tool for modelling potential market moves.

The new element is the Options Strategy Builder. Swissquote says it supports:

  • Straddles
  • Strangles
  • Vertical spreads
  • Diagonal spreads
  • Calendar spreads

The builder is intended to show the proposed position’s maximum profit, maximum loss, breakeven points, payoff curve and probability zones. Those displays can make a multi-leg trade easier to understand before an order is submitted, but they do not remove the risk of loss or guarantee that the displayed probability will be accurate.

Swissquote’s FY2025 results presentation places the feature in its 2025 product roadmap. It does not state that the builder launched on a particular date, and the public material does not document every order-entry rule. In particular, it is not yet possible to conclude from the marketing description whether every strategy is available on every exchange or whether each strategy is submitted as one native multi-leg order.

What “vanilla option” means

A plain vanilla option is a standard call or put without unusual conditions or embedded features. A call gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy an underlying asset at a specified strike price. A put gives the buyer the right to sell it. The buyer pays a premium; the seller takes on potentially substantial obligations in return.

Swissquote uses the term in its securities-risk documentation, but its current product pages generally use the simpler label Options & Futures. Describing the change as “Swissquote adding vanilla options” is therefore incomplete: the broker already offers conventional listed options, while the clearer product development is the strategy-building and analysis workflow.

How to find the option chain

Swissquote’s current platform page calls the feature Option Chain. The exact layout can vary by Swissquote entity and platform version, but the company’s education material gives this desktop workflow:

  1. Open the Trading space.
  2. Select the Widgets icon.
  3. Drag My Optionschain into the main part of the platform.
  4. Click Select an underlying.
  5. Enter the company name or ticker.
  6. Select the correct listing and exchange. Swissquote’s example uses Microsoft and specifies US/Nasdaq National Market.

The older spelling “My Optionschain” comes from an educational document, not a current release note. The live website uses “Option Chain”, so customers should search for that label if the older name is not shown.

Choosing only a company name, or selecting the wrong listing, can result in an empty or incomplete chain. Once the correct underlying is selected, the tool can be used to filter contracts by expiry and strike.

Desktop access and mobile limitations

Swissquote marks both Option Chain and Stress Test Tool with an asterisk on its Switzerland platform page and explains that starred features are desktop-only. The public documentation does not say that these tools are available in the mobile app.

Investors should not assume that the mobile application offers the same options workflow as the desktop platform. If a feature or contract is missing, check the desktop interface and the Swissquote entity serving your country before assuming the product is unavailable.

Markets and availability vary by country

Swissquote does not provide one identical options service to every customer. Products, exchanges, fees and access conditions depend on the legal entity and the client’s country of residence. Swissquote itself warns users to select the region corresponding to their residence because products may vary.

Swissquote Bank Europe currently advertises access to markets including:

Market Examples described by Swissquote
EUREX European options and futures
ISE and OPRA US stock and index options, including NYSE, Nasdaq and Amex coverage through OPRA
Cboe VIX futures and options on SPX, DJX and NDX
CME Crypto options and futures, including BTC, ETH and micro contracts

Swissquote Bank Europe advertises options and futures trading hours of 07:30 to 22:00 CET, five days a week. That is a product-hours statement, not a promise that every individual contract trades throughout the full window.

Eligibility: seeing a contract does not guarantee permission to trade it

Swissquote’s options education material says customers must pass a knowledge test before options trading is available and directs them to Client Services to obtain the test. Its options-and-futures agreement is also a prerequisite for this type of transaction.

Swissquote may reject orders, cancel a client’s right to conduct options transactions or impose transaction-size limits. The agreement preserves an exception for orders intended solely to liquidate an existing position. Consequently, an option may appear in a search result or chain while an attempted purchase, sale or strategy order is still blocked.

Common reasons include:

  • the knowledge test or derivatives authorisation is incomplete;
  • the relevant exchange or real-time-data entitlement is unavailable;
  • the instrument is restricted for the account or residence;
  • the order exceeds a Swissquote position-size limit; or
  • the requested multi-leg strategy is not supported for that contract.

Fees to check before trading

Options costs are not limited to the premium. Commissions, exchange charges, market-data fees, exercise or assignment costs and possible financing charges can all affect the result.

For Swissquote Bank Europe, the published per-contract commissions include:

Market Published commission Minimum
EUREX options and futures EUR/CHF 2 per contract EUR/CHF 9.95
ISE options USD 2.50 per contract USD 9.95
Cboe options and futures USD 2.50 per contract USD 9.95

Exchange fees are additional. Swissquote Bank Europe also lists separate real-time-data charges, including USD 3 per month for ISE, USD 5 for CME, USD 5 for EUREX and USD 4 for Cboe VIX futures. A CME markets package is listed at USD 15 per month.

Swissquote Switzerland’s published schedule differs. It lists European stock and index options at CHF 1.50 or EUR 1.50 per contract, subject to a CHF/EUR 5 minimum; US stock options at USD 1.50 with a USD 5 minimum; and US index options at USD 1.99 with a USD 5 minimum. Stock-exchange fees are excluded.

Swissquote Switzerland also lists an overnight fee from 1 January 2026 where available cash in the relevant currency is below the required margin. The published funding fee is 1.5%, charged monthly. The stated calculation is:

Daily Overnight Fee per currency = max(0, Margin − max(0, Cash)) × Days Held × Funding Fee / 360

Expiry and exercise: an important Swissquote Bank Europe rule

Swissquote Bank Europe states that an in-the-money long option is exercised at expiry rather than automatically sold. Its product page explicitly says: “Swissquote doesn’t sell the contract for you (no auto-sell).” The FAQ says exercise takes place during the last day before expiration. A long option that is out of the money expires worthless.

If you do not want an in-the-money option exercised, you must close it before expiration day. Exercise can create a position in the underlying asset, which may require sufficient cash or margin. Exercise itself is described as free of charge, but the normal commission for the underlying or option can still apply. For stock-option exercise or assignment, the standard buy or sell commission on the underlying stock may be charged.

This policy is specific to the cited Swissquote Bank Europe documentation. Customers of another Swissquote entity should confirm the applicable expiry and exercise rules rather than assuming they are identical.

What the builder does—and does not—tell you

A payoff curve can show how a strategy would perform at different underlying prices or dates. Breakeven points show where the modelled position moves from a loss to a profit at expiry or under the selected assumptions. Maximum-loss and maximum-profit figures can be useful checks against accidentally entering the wrong strikes, expiry dates or buy/sell directions.

However, a strategy display may not capture every practical risk. Bid-ask spreads, slippage, commissions, early exercise, assignment, changes in implied volatility, liquidity and the cost of closing a leg can materially change the outcome. Probability zones are estimates, not promises.

For a personal investor, the sensible use of the builder is as a pre-trade checklist:

  1. Confirm the underlying and exchange.
  2. Check each leg’s strike, expiry, call/put designation and buy/sell direction.
  3. Review the maximum loss and whether it can exceed the premium paid.
  4. Calculate commissions and exchange charges for every leg.
  5. Check margin, cash requirements and what happens if one leg is exercised or assigned.
  6. Confirm the expiry policy for your Swissquote entity.

FAQ

Is Swissquote adding vanilla options for the first time?

No. Swissquote already offers listed stock and index options through exchanges including EUREX, ISE, OPRA-linked US markets and Cboe-related markets. The current expansion is the Options Strategy Builder for multi-leg strategies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What strategies does Swissquote’s Options Strategy Builder support?

The current Swissquote Bank Europe product page lists straddles, strangles, vertical spreads, diagonal spreads and calendar spreads. It also advertises maximum profit and loss, breakeven points, payoff curves and probability zones.

Can I trade options through the Swissquote mobile app?

Swissquote’s Switzerland platform page marks Option Chain and Stress Test Tool as desktop-only features. The public documentation does not confirm that these tools are available in the mobile app.

Why can I see an option but not place an order?

Possible reasons include incomplete options authorisation or the knowledge test, missing exchange or market-data access, account restrictions, a position-size limit or an unsupported strategy. Swissquote’s agreement also allows it to reject orders.

Does Swissquote automatically sell an in-the-money option at expiry?

Not according to the current Swissquote Bank Europe policy. An in-the-money long option is exercised rather than auto-sold. Customers who do not want exercise must close the position before expiration day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Swissquote options fees the same in every country?

No. Fees and product availability vary by Swissquote entity and country of residence. Switzerland and Swissquote Bank Europe publish different commission schedules, and exchange fees may be additional.

The Bottom Line

Swissquote is better described as expanding its options tools than launching vanilla options from scratch. Listed calls and puts were already available; the notable development is a strategy builder designed to model multi-leg trades and display their payoff characteristics.

Before trading, verify the platform entity, desktop access, derivatives authorisation, exchange entitlement, contract specifications, commissions, data charges and expiry treatment. The most consequential detail for Swissquote Bank Europe customers is that an in-the-money long option is exercised at expiry rather than automatically sold.
