Bitcoin, Ether and smaller tokens fell on October 7, 2026, as oil prices rose and broader market jitters coincided with forced crypto selling. Those were explanations reported at the time, not proof of a single cause. The available reports do not establish that almost every cryptocurrency fell, and their quoted prices are snapshots from October 7—not live prices for October 8.

What happened in the October 7 crypto selloff?

Bitcoin fell below $84,000 during the decline, according to CoinDesk’s October 7 report. Bloomberg, in a report carried by Yahoo Finance, said Bitcoin fell as much as 2.4% to $83,583 and Ether fell 3.9% to $2,594. Those are Bloomberg’s reported intraday figures, not current quotes. Smaller tokens also came under pressure, but the reports do not document every cryptocurrency individually.

What was behind the decline?

Oil prices and broader market jitters

CoinDesk connected the decline to rising oil prices amid Iranian tanker attacks. Bloomberg described broader market jitters alongside forced selling. These reports provide contemporaneous context, but do not demonstrate that the tanker attacks or oil prices alone caused the crypto market’s losses.

Forced selling and liquidations

Bloomberg reported that about $550 million in crypto positions were liquidated over a 24-hour period, citing CoinGlass data. Liquidations happen when leveraged positions are closed after traders can no longer meet margin requirements. Forced closures can add selling pressure to a falling market, but the liquidation total does not identify what initially triggered the decline.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Dan Khus, chief analyst at LVRG Research, characterized the move as a “leverage flush” rather than a downward trend, saying crowded bets on higher prices were forced out and most liquidations came from long positions—trades that profit if prices rise. That is an analyst’s interpretation, not an established explanation of the entire market move. CoinDesk’s coverage also cited a liquidation estimate of about $547 million; Bloomberg’s roughly $550 million figure is its own report of CoinGlass data, with a 24-hour measurement window.

Did almost every cryptocurrency crash?

The reporting supports a broad decline among the assets it names: Bitcoin, Ether and smaller tokens. It does not establish that almost every cryptocurrency fell, since it provides no complete asset-by-asset accounting. “Almost every” is therefore broader than the evidence supports.
