Binance announced on August 4, 2025, that eligible Binance Options users could write (sell) BTC options by switching their account to the platform’s “Long & Short Sell” trading mode. “All users” describes the announcement’s expanded access, not a guarantee of access for every person: Binance says availability varies by region, and users must be able to use Binance Options where they live.
What Binance changed
Binance’s August 4, 2025 announcement said users could write BTC options directly on Binance after upgrading their account to “Long & Short Sell” mode. Previously, writing access was restricted; the announcement framed the change as opening BTC options writing to Binance Options users, subject to regional and account availability.
Writing an option means selling it. Binance’s FAQ, published July 16, 2025 and updated July 28, 2026, says the feature lets a user sell an option without already owning that option. That differs from buying an option, where the buyer pays a premium for the contract’s rights.
How to access BTC options writing
- Confirm availability. Check whether Binance Options and options short-selling are available for your jurisdiction and account. Binance’s announcement warns that products may not be available in every region.
- Switch the trading mode. In Binance Options, upgrade the account’s mode to “Long & Short Sell.” Binance identifies this mode as the access requirement for writing options.
- Review the contract and margin before submitting an order. Check the contract’s strike, expiry, settlement details, required margin, and applicable fees. A short option can create losses and liquidation exposure; switching modes does not remove those risks.
Settlement, strategies and fees
Binance says its options are priced and settled in stablecoins, currently USDT. Its announcement names directional trading, hedging spot or futures exposure, covered calls, and cash-secured puts as possible use cases. These are strategies, not guaranteed income: a written option can lose money, and the risk depends on the position and market movement.

The 2025 announcement also advertised a 20% maker and taker fee discount on newly listed options contracts across VIP levels. That dated promotion was limited to newly listed contracts; it should not be treated as a current discount on all BTC options. Check the applicable fee terms for the contract and account before trading.
Margin, liquidation and other risks
Binance’s FAQ says short options require initial and maintenance margin. If the position’s margin becomes insufficient, a margin call or liquidation may follow under the platform’s rules. A short option that finishes in the money may require the writer to pay the difference between the strike and final settlement price, as described in the FAQ.

- Potentially substantial losses: The writer takes on an obligation under the contract; the premium received does not cap every possible loss.
- Liquidation: Binance may liquidate positions when margin requirements are not met. The FAQ also describes fees associated with liquidation.
- Auto-deleveraging: Binance identifies auto-deleveraging as a possible risk-control measure.
- Limited risk netting: Binance says ordinary users trade options under cross margin without portfolio margining or risk netting across Options, Futures, and Margin accounts. It describes Portfolio Margin SPAN access as available only to eligible Enhanced Program users through API.
These mechanics are Binance’s own product descriptions, not independent validation of a particular trade’s risk. The FAQ is educational rather than legal terms or advice, and Binance cautions that its information may be outdated.

The later FAQ status, updated July 28, 2026, says BTC and ETH writing are supported at that time; BNB, XRP, SOL, and DOGE are not available for short selling. This is a dated product status, not a promise that the asset list will remain unchanged.

Availability also depends on jurisdiction and account eligibility. Binance’s August 2025 announcement said the product may vary by region. The announcement separately listed more than 100 million USDT in 30-day trading volume and assets above 1 million USDT as criteria for applying to the Options Enhanced Program; those dated thresholds are not general entry requirements for BTC options writing.
