Separately, chairman Tom Wagner described a proposed 62,000-seat stadium as part of a wider Sports Quarter plan in a June 2025 interview. The available reports do not establish a current decision on Leonard or prove that the stadium plans have been delivered.
Is Birmingham City midfielder Marc Leonard leaving?
A BBC Sport gossip item published on 6 January 2026, citing Birmingham Live, said Leonard had been given the green light to depart, with a loan preferred. It also reported that manager Chris Davies was reluctant to let him go unless Birmingham brought in midfield reinforcements. That is a conditional report, not confirmation that Leonard left or that a current exit is agreed. BBC Sport’s January gossip item does not establish his present status.
Which Birmingham City transfer was confirmed?
Kai Wagner’s return to Philadelphia Union
The more developed exit story concerned Kai Wagner, a left-back, not a midfielder. On 16 July 2026, bet365 News and The72 reported that he was expected to return to Philadelphia Union; the reports attributed the developing update to reporting including Philadelphia Inquirer journalist Tom Bogert. At the time, The72 said Wagner had made 16 league appearances and provided three assists for Birmingham, with a contract running to June 2028. bet365 News’ 16 July report also relayed Davies saying the situations around Wagner and Kyogo Furuhashi would become clearer in the following days, and reported Turkish media claims that right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel wanted to return to Fenerbahçe. Those were reports about developing situations, not official confirmations of each player’s future.
Philadelphia Union subsequently announced Wagner’s acquisition from Birmingham City, confirming the completed move. The distinction matters: the July articles described an expected departure; the club announcement confirmed the transfer. Philadelphia Union’s official announcement is the confirmation.

What did Tom Wagner say about the Powerhouse Stadium?
In an interview published by BBC Sport on 4 June 2025, Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner discussed a proposed stadium and wider Sports Quarter in Bordesley Green. The figures in that report describe plans and an ambition, not completed facilities or a verified construction timetable:
| Proposal | Figure or aim reported | Context |
|---|---|---|
| New Birmingham City stadium | 62,000 seats | Proposed replacement for St Andrew’s, as reported by BBC Sport on 4 June 2025. |
| Sports Quarter site | 125 acres | Proposed development in Bordesley Green, as reported by BBC Sport on 4 June 2025. |
| Arena | 20,000 seats | One of the wider project proposals in the same report. |
| Opening ambition | 2030 | Wagner’s stated aim for the development in the 2025 interview; this is not confirmation the date remains current. |
The broader vision described in the interview also included a hotel and training complex. Wagner said transport links were needed for the site to be viable and discussed possible non-football uses. These were statements about the proposal, not evidence of funding committed, planning approval, construction or delivery. BBC Sport’s interview with Tom Wagner sets out the dated proposal.

Wagner’s comment on ticket prices and atmosphere
Discussing affordability and the matchday experience, Wagner said: “If you price out the fans that are here you have different people sitting in the stands, you lose the singing, you lose the passion and then you’ve lost your product.” The quotation was reported by BBC Sport on 4 June 2025.
