Reporting that his venture firm, Founders Fund, backed Airbnb does not confirm a personal investment by Thiel, the stated amount, or whether any deal was proposed or completed.
What is known about the alleged Airbnb investment?
The available sources do not verify that Thiel considered, offered, or made a $150 million investment in Airbnb. They also do not establish where the claim originated, when it was supposedly made, or what its terms might have been. Without an original report, filing, or attributable statement, it should not be presented as a confirmed investment or plan.
A 2022 New York Review of Books profile says Founders Fund, the venture firm Thiel started, backed Airbnb. That is relevant background, but it does not identify a $150 million transaction or establish that Thiel personally invested that sum.
Where does the $150 million figure come from?
Two 2017 New Zealand reports attach a figure around $150 million to a different company: Xero, the accounting software company. The New Zealand Herald estimated that entities it said were controlled by Thiel held a 5.64% stake in Xero, valued at more than $150 million. Newstalk ZB separately described his Xero holding as worth around $150 million.

Those reports concern Xero, not Airbnb. They do not establish an Airbnb investment, and the Xero valuation should not be treated as evidence for the Airbnb claim.
What evidence would settle the question?
An original, attributable source is needed to determine whether an Airbnb deal was ever under consideration. It would need to clarify whether the investor was Thiel personally or a fund, whether the amount was $150 million, when the discussion occurred, what kind of investment was contemplated, and whether it was only proposed or actually completed.

Company announcements can document separate financing events without proving this claim. For example, Flexport announced a $20 million Series A led by Founders Fund in 2015; that financing involved Flexport, not Airbnb, and says nothing about a Thiel–Airbnb investment. Flexport’s announcement is therefore not evidence for the alleged Airbnb transaction.
