Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The best movie gift depends on how the recipient enjoys film: collecting and rewatching, learning how movies are made, going to the cinema, or discovering titles through a curated streaming service. For a known fan, a specific edition or film-related book can feel personal; if you do not know what they already own, a gift card or cinema outing is less likely to duplicate their collection. Prices and seasonal promotions cited in 2025 holiday guides are historical, not current offers.
Choose a gift that fits how they enjoy movies
Start with the recipient’s habits, then consider what you know about their collection and where they live. A premium box set suits someone who replays favorite films and values physical editions; a cinema gift suits someone who likes the shared experience of a theater; streaming access is aimed at someone who wants discovery rather than ownership.
- Know their favorite director or film? Consider a specific edition or franchise merchandise, after checking whether they already have it.
- Interested in how films are made? A book about cinematography or filmmaking can be more useful than another movie copy.
- Unsure what they own? A retailer gift card or cinema gift avoids guessing at their collection.
- Prefer access to a library of films? Consider a curated streaming service, but confirm its current gift terms, catalog, territory and renewal conditions.
For collectors: The Wes Anderson Archive
For a serious Wes Anderson fan or physical-media collector, The Criterion Collection’s The Wes Anderson Archive: Ten Films, Twenty-Five Years is the most substantial specific set in the 2025 holiday coverage. The Associated Press described it as a 20-disc collection covering 10 films, from Bottle Rocket through The French Dispatch, with new 4K masters, more than 25 hours of special features, ten illustrated clothbound books and essays. The AP’s 2025 guide listed it at $399.96; that is a dated guide price, not a verified current listing. The Associated Press’s 2025 gift guide is the source for those details.
Before buying, check that the recipient has a compatible player and wants this edition. Confirm its current format and availability, and whether they already own the films. A large set is a poor surprise if it duplicates an existing collection or does not suit their equipment.
#1 Best Overall
- How to Play: Compete with your friends to identify popular movies from the most convoluted movie summaries possible. Has your mom ever tried to explain a film that she just watched? Did it make one ounce of sense? Of course not–and that’s precisely the inspiration for this game. For example: A goose suddenly dies and it makes everyone really depressed. Psst, it’s 'Top Gun’.
- Package Includes: Features 125 game cards–each featuring a uniquely-terrible description of a movie. Includes instructions for two distinct ways to play (competitive & casual). Suitable for 2 to 8 players.
- Perfect for parties: Brass Monkey’s “Poorly Explained Movies Game” is the perfect party game to make sure everyone has a great time, bring it to your next college dorm game night, happy hour, or even bachelor/bachelorette party and see for yourself.
- Gift Ideas: Ideal gift for birthdays, graduation, holiday gifts, and Christmas
For someone fascinated by filmmaking: a cinematography book
Roger Deakins’s Reflections: On Cinematography offers a different kind of movie gift: an illustrated memoir about the cinematographer’s life and work, with storyboards, sketches and diagrams, according to the AP’s 2025 guide. The guide listed the book at $45 and identified Hachette Book Group; neither figure establishes today’s price or availability. Check current retailer listings before purchasing. See the AP guide’s description.
When you do not know what they own: a Criterion gift card
A gift card lets a recipient choose a title or other eligible item rather than leaving you to guess at their shelves. Criterion’s official page offers e-gift and mailed-card options. It also states that its gift cards cannot be redeemed for Criterion Channel subscriptions, so do not treat a card as a way to prepay for that streaming service. Review the Criterion gift-card page for current options and terms.

For a night out: theater gift cards or memberships
A theater gift card or cinema membership gives the recipient an outing instead of another object. This is a practical choice when they enjoy seeing films on a big screen, but the value depends on whether a participating location is convenient and on the gift’s current expiration, redemption and membership terms. Check local availability directly with the theater before buying.

The Film Stage also discusses theater gift cards and memberships as gift categories. Consult Cinemark and The Film Stage for context, then verify terms with the relevant theater.
For a fan of a particular movie: film-related merchandise
Merchandise tied to a favorite film or franchise can be more personal than generic movie equipment. Focus Features’ 2025 holiday guide included movie-themed apparel and character merchandise, with examples such as a Nosferatu Funko Pop! figure and Hamnet-related items. These are examples from a past seasonal guide, not confirmation of current stock. Check Focus Features’ guide and the seller’s current listing before choosing an item.

For discovery rather than ownership: curated streaming
The AP’s guide discusses Kino Film Collection, Criterion Channel and MUBI as curated streaming options for cinephiles. A service may suit someone who values access to a changing selection over owning discs, but the cited coverage does not establish current catalog availability, subscription prices, gift mechanics or territory for these services. Check those details and renewal terms with the service before purchasing. Criterion’s retail gift card is not a substitute for a Criterion Channel subscription, as the official card terms make clear.
Quick Recap
Final checks before you spend
- For discs: Confirm player compatibility, edition details, current stock and whether the films are already owned.
- For a book or merchandise: Check the current price, seller and availability; historical guide listings do not guarantee today’s stock.
- For a gift card or theater membership: Verify eligible locations, redemption rules and expiration terms.
- For streaming: Confirm the recipient’s territory, present catalog, gift-subscription process and renewal terms. Do not assume a retail gift card pays for a subscription.
- For an uncertain collection: Favor a choice-based gift or outing over a specific edition that could be a duplicate.
