No one flight website is cheapest for every route and date. For a stronger price comparison, use one site to find flexible dates or destinations, cross-check a second site with a different mix of results, then verify the final price and ticket rules with the airline or seller before paying. The right choice depends on whether you want the lowest displayed fare, the lowest total after baggage and seats, or better support if plans change.
Which flight website should you start with?
For flexible-date or flexible-destination searches, start with Google Flights or Skyscanner, then cross-check on another service. Going’s October 2026 comparison recommends Google Flights for date calendars, destination exploration, and multi-city searches, while noting that it may miss some smaller online travel agencies (OTAs). Skyscanner is useful for exploring its “Everywhere” destinations and can surface budget-carrier and third-party agency fares, but Going’s August 2026 comparison warns that some displayed fares may rise at checkout. Neither result establishes a permanent cheapest site. Going’s October 2026 comparison and August 2026 comparison offer qualitative guidance, not a route-by-route price test.
Use KAYAK or Momondo as a cross-check. KAYAK documents a Price Calendar, price alerts, a Fee Assistant that estimates some add-on fees, and side-by-side fare inclusions. Momondo may surface smaller OTA fares, according to Going’s October comparison, though results can take longer. The reviewed sources do not show that either consistently beats other sites.
Compare the tools by what they actually do
| Service | Useful for | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Google Flights | Flexible-date calendars, exploring destinations, and multi-city searches, according to Going’s October 2026 comparison. | Going says it may miss some smaller OTAs; treat it as a discovery tool, not proof that its fare is the lowest. Source |
| Skyscanner | Flexible destination searches through “Everywhere” and finding fares from some budget carriers or third-party agencies, according to Going. | Some displayed fares may increase at checkout. Confirm the final price and seller. Source |
| KAYAK | Price Calendar, alerts, estimated add-on fees, and side-by-side fare inclusions. | Its displayed fare generally excludes optional baggage and seat fees. Price forecasts are not available for every route or search type. KAYAK help |
| Momondo | A deeper cross-check that may find some smaller OTA fares, according to Going. | Results can take longer; no consistent price advantage is established. Source |
| Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz, and Travelocity | Booking through an OTA when its final offer compares favorably with the airline’s direct fare. | These are sellers, not just comparison tools. Consider who will handle changes or cancellations; Going recommends booking direct when possible to avoid third-party complications. Source |
| Going | Fare alerts for travelers who can act when a deal appears. | Going describes itself as an alert service, not a flight search engine or OTA. Its claimed fares 40–90% below typical prices are promotional claims, not an independently validated average or a guarantee. Source |
How to compare fares without overlooking the real cost
- Search with flexibility. Use Google Flights or Skyscanner to explore dates and destinations if your plans allow it.
- Cross-check elsewhere. Compare with a second service such as Skyscanner, KAYAK, or Momondo; no one search site displays every available fare, according to Going’s qualitative comparison.
- Match the itinerary and fare. Check the same airports, dates, stops, and ticket type. A lower result may be a different itinerary or separate tickets rather than a like-for-like fare.
- Add only the extras you need. Account for baggage, seat selection, and other services required for your trip. KAYAK says its displayed prices include applicable taxes and mandatory fees but generally omit optional baggage, some carry-ons, seat selection, and pet fees. Its Fee Assistant estimates some baggage and payment fees from provider data; confirm with the seller. KAYAK fee details
- Check the checkout price and seller. Fares can change after a search, and a displayed price may no longer be available. Before paying, identify whether the airline or an OTA is selling the ticket and review the applicable fare rules. KAYAK notes on prices
Check baggage and ticket structure before booking
Baggage and seat fees
The cheapest displayed fare may not include baggage. Allowances, dimensions, weight limits, and charges depend on the airline and fare, so check the current rules for the specific itinerary with the airline or travel provider. Skyscanner’s 2026 baggage comparison says its fee examples vary by route and timing and exclude some waivers and promotions; they are not a universal quote. This comparison concerns US-origin or domestic US fare examples, not a worldwide fee schedule. Skyscanner baggage guidance · Skyscanner’s 2026 fee comparison

Separate one-way tickets
KAYAK’s Hacker Fare combines two separate one-way tickets. Each booking has its own confirmation and policies, and one airline is not obligated to accommodate a disruption involving the other ticket. A lower fare may therefore bring connection risk as well as separate baggage, change, and refund rules. Weigh the savings against the consequences of a delay or missed connection before choosing this structure. KAYAK on Hacker Fares

- Lowest displayed base fare: useful for spotting an inexpensive starting price, but it may exclude optional services.
- Lowest usable total: the fare plus the baggage, seat, or other add-ons you actually need.
- Best value with support: the price considered alongside ticket flexibility and the company responsible for changes or cancellations.
