Bill Gates Donated $7.88 Billion to Melinda French Gates’s Philanthropy in 2024, Report Says

The reported $7.88 billion went to Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation in 2024 as part of a previously announced philanthropic commitment—not as a personal payment to Melinda French Gates.

Bill Gates did not make a reported $8 billion personal payment to his former wife. A January 2026 report said he donated $7.88 billion in 2024 to Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, the nonprofit associated with Melinda French Gates. The reported donation was part of a $12.5 billion philanthropic commitment French Gates described when she left the Gates Foundation in 2024—not a newly announced agreement years after their divorce announcement.

What the $7.88 billion figure refers to

GeekWire reported on January 9, 2026, citing Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation’s 2024 tax filing, that Bill Gates donated $7.88 billion to the foundation in 2024. The figure is often rounded to $8 billion, but $7.88 billion is the amount reported. GeekWire’s report says The New York Times first reported the filing and that Pivotal confirmed the full $12.5 billion agreement had been fulfilled.

The filing is for Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation’s fiscal year ending December 2024. ProPublica’s filing page identifies the foundation and the Form 990-PF, but its accessible text does not show the $7.88 billion transaction line. The exact donation amount here is therefore attributed to GeekWire’s reporting on the filing, rather than presented as a figure independently visible on ProPublica’s page.

Who received the donation?

The named recipient was Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, a nonprofit associated with French Gates—not French Gates personally. Pivotal says its approach is to partner with organizations and support and scale solutions to social problems. Its stated focus areas include women’s health and well-being, caregiving, young people’s mental health, and women in technology. Pivotal’s philanthropy overview describes those priorities.

That distinction matters: reporting that money went to a foundation does not establish that the same amount was paid into an individual’s personal account. Nor does the reported donation by itself disclose the transaction’s full route, timing, or terms beyond what was reported about the charitable commitment.

How the donation relates to the $12.5 billion commitment

In May 2024, as she announced her departure from the Gates Foundation, French Gates said that under her agreement with Bill Gates she would have “an additional $12.5 billion to commit to my work on behalf of women and families.” GeekWire reported her statement; the Associated Press also reported the commitment. AP’s May 2024 report

The later-reported $7.88 billion donation belongs in the context of that previously announced philanthropic agreement. GeekWire reported that Pivotal said the full $12.5 billion agreement had been fulfilled. The $7.88 billion figure is the reported donation to the foundation for 2024; the reporting does not establish that this one donation was the only transfer or payment used to fulfill the full commitment, or explain how any balance was routed.

Was this payment made after the divorce was finalized?

The couple announced their divorce on May 3, 2021, after 27 years of marriage. Contemporaneous GeekWire coverage establishes the announcement date. The sources cited here do not independently establish the date the divorce was legally finalized, so the more precise description supported by the available reporting is that the donation occurred in 2024, three years after the divorce announcement.

Is Pivotal the Gates Foundation?

No. Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are distinct organizations. The Gates Foundation’s history says French Gates left in 2024 to pursue her philanthropic priorities. The foundation’s history and timeline describe that transition. Its own FAQ separately explains its funding and work; it reports that Bill and Melinda French Gates had given a combined $60.2 billion to the Gates Foundation as of the end of 2024. That cumulative figure concerns the Gates Foundation, not the Pivotal agreement or the 2024 donation.

Quick Recap

What remains unclear from the reported figures

  • The $7.88 billion is a figure attributed to GeekWire’s report on the 2024 filing; the accessible ProPublica filing page does not display the transaction amount.
  • The reporting reviewed does not explain the route or timing of any portion of the $12.5 billion commitment beyond the reported $7.88 billion donation.
  • The cited sources establish the 2021 divorce announcement, not the legal finalization date.
