A huge discount, polished storefront, or social-media ad does not prove a seller is legitimate. Before you buy, verify the retailer through its official website or app, avoid unexpected links, and use a payment method with a way to dispute suspicious charges. If a deal or delivery message asks for a wire transfer, gift card, or surprise fee, stop and check independently.
How can you tell if a Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal is a scam?
Start with the seller, not the sale price. Fraudsters copy familiar brands, advertise implausible discounts, or use sponsored posts to send shoppers to fake stores. A professional-looking site and HTTPS connection are not proof that the business is genuine.
Check the retailer and the exact website address
- Instead of following an ad or message link, search for the retailer yourself or open its official app. Compare the address carefully with the retailer’s known domain.
- Look for independently verifiable seller and contact information. Be cautious if the seller’s identity is unclear or the site appears to imitate a familiar brand.
- Compare the advertised price with other sellers and the retailer’s usual pricing. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) cautions that sale prices can be inflated, while an unusually low offer may be bait.
BBB’s Cyber Monday shopping guidance recommends checking the seller, price, and purchase terms before checkout. The BBB also advises shoppers to go directly to a retailer’s official site rather than trust a deal link in a social-media post.
Read the terms before you pay
Check shipping costs and timing, return rules, and whether an item is final sale. Misleading listings may describe a product inaccurately, while fraudulent sellers may take payment without sending anything. Preserve the listing and terms in case you need to dispute the transaction.

The FBI and BBB recommend using a credit card for online purchases where possible. Review card statements and contact the issuer promptly if a charge looks suspicious. A credit card does not guarantee a refund, but it gives you a channel to raise an unauthorized or disputed charge.

Do not pay an online seller by wire transfer or prepaid or gift card. Scammers can take the funds, and these methods can be difficult to recover. A request for a gift-card number or PIN, or for a wire transfer as the only payment option, is a serious warning sign.
Online checkout can also expose payment data to electronic skimming. The BBB explains that skimming can capture card information during checkout; reaching a site through a trusted route and checking the seller’s identity still matter. An HTTPS indicator alone does not establish that a store is honest. See the BBB’s overview of online shopping scams.

Is this delivery text or email real?
Unexpected messages about a delivery, account problem, payment, or limited-time deal may be phishing attempts. A fake message can impersonate a retailer, payment service, or delivery company and try to steal login credentials or payment details. Some texts claim you must update an address or choose a delivery preference; others demand a surprise redelivery fee.
- Do not tap the message link, open an attachment, or reply with personal or payment information.
- Open the retailer’s app or type its official website address yourself. For a shipment, use the tracking number there or visit the carrier’s official site independently.
- If the retailer or carrier confirms a real problem, resolve it through that official channel—not through the message’s payment link.
The FTC’s phishing guidance advises consumers not to use links or contact details in unexpected messages to verify a claimed problem. The BBB also documents fake delivery notifications, incorrect-item schemes, and scams involving stolen tracking codes in its online shopping scam guidance.

How can you keep a purchase and delivery easier to verify?
- Save the product listing, order confirmation, payment record, and the seller’s stated shipping and return terms.
- Keep the tracking number, but check progress through the retailer or carrier directly rather than an unsolicited update.
- Keep communication and payment within an established marketplace’s safeguards. Be wary if a seller tries to move the conversation or payment to an independent site.
- Check card statements for charges you do not recognize and contact the issuer about suspicious transactions.
These records can help you explain what was offered, what you paid, and whether an item arrived if you need to contact the seller, marketplace, or payment provider.
What should you do if you paid a fake store?
- Stop interacting with the site or message. Do not send more money to recover a payment or pay a new fee to release an order.
- Contact your card issuer or payment provider promptly. Explain what happened and ask what steps are available for the transaction. If you entered account credentials, secure the affected account through the provider’s official site or app.
- Save evidence. Keep receipts, order confirmations, the listing, messages, website address, and payment records.
- Report the fraud through appropriate official channels. In the United States, the FBI points consumers to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the FTC accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) also identifies state attorneys general and local police as possible contacts.
These reporting routes are U.S.-specific; shoppers elsewhere should contact their country’s consumer-protection or law-enforcement authorities and their payment provider. The CFPB’s scam and fraud contact guidance describes U.S. options.

What do the reported loss figures show?
The FBI’s holiday scam guidance, citing the IC3 2025 report, says reported losses from non-payment and non-delivery scams exceeded $503 million in 2025. It also cites $282 million in reported credit-card fraud losses that year. These are annual figures, not Black Friday or Cyber Monday totals.
The BBB reports that more than 87% of people who engaged with a scammer via social media said they lost money in 2025. That finding concerns people who engaged with a scammer, not all shoppers. It underscores why a social-media ad should be treated as a lead to verify—not proof of a genuine deal.
