The lowest advertised personal-loan rate is not necessarily your lowest-cost offer. Compare personalized APRs for the same amount and repayment term, then check the fee, cash you will receive, monthly payment, and total repayment. Rates described as “as low as” are conditional—not promises that you will qualify.

What counts as a low-interest personal loan?

For an unsecured personal loan, a low interest rate can make borrowing less expensive, but the stated rate alone does not show the full cost. Compare APR, which accounts for interest and relevant fees, rather than choosing by the advertised interest rate. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that Regulation Z protects people when they use consumer credit and sets rules for credit disclosures, including APR disclosures for covered loans. Read the CFPB’s Regulation Z overview.

There is no single lender that is best for every borrower. The rate and terms available to you depend on your application and on factors such as credit profile, amount, term, lender relationship discounts, geography, and underwriting.

Lender or source Published figure What the figure means
Wells Fargo 6.74% APR Rate-page floor accessed October 8, 2026, for a personal loan of at least $10,000 with a three-year term. It includes a 0.25-percentage-point relationship discount. Wells Fargo reported that at least 10% of applicants approved for these terms qualified for the lowest rate, based on April 1–June 30, 2026 data. This is a dated, conditional offer, not a typical or guaranteed rate. See Wells Fargo’s rate details.
Discover Personal Loans 6.99%–24.99% APR Range shown on Discover’s product page accessed October 8, 2026. Discover also states that its product has no fees. This is the lender’s published range; an individual offer depends on underwriting and terms. See Discover’s product terms.
Bankrate market snapshot 8%–36% typical APR range; 12.53% average Bankrate’s secondary market snapshot for October 2026, derived from its own data—not a regulator statistic or a guarantee of offers available to a particular borrower. See Bankrate’s rate snapshot.

How to compare personal-loan offers

  1. Request comparable offers. Use the same requested loan amount and repayment term when comparing lenders. Otherwise, differences in payment or cost may reflect different loan structures rather than better pricing.
  2. Compare APR and fees. Check the APR alongside the interest rate and identify any origination or other fees. A fee may be deducted from the loan proceeds, leaving you with less cash than the amount you must repay.
  3. Compare the payment and full repayment. Review the monthly payment, number of payments, and total amount repaid over the term. A lower payment can come from a longer term, which gives interest more time to accrue.
  4. Check eligibility and conditions. Confirm whether the quoted rate requires a particular amount, term, relationship discount, or other condition, and whether the lender serves your location.
  5. Read the final documents before accepting. Review the final disclosure and loan agreement for fees, late charges, prepayment conditions, the exact term, and the payment schedule.

Why APR and origination fees matter

An origination fee can raise a loan’s cost even when the interest rate appears unchanged. For example, Discover’s fee explanation, updated December 30, 2025, compares an $18,000 loan over 60 months at 12.99% interest: the example shows a 12.99% APR with no fee and a 15.18% APR with a 5% fee. Discover estimates about $900 more in total borrowing cost in that specific scenario. It is an illustration, not a prediction of the effect of every lender’s fee. Read the fee explanation and example.

When a lender deducts a fee from proceeds, compare the cash actually delivered with the repayment obligation. A loan advertised at a particular amount may deliver less than that amount if a fee is withheld, while the payment schedule is based on the loan terms in the agreement.

Choosing between a lower payment and lower total cost

Loan term affects both affordability and cost. Extending repayment can reduce the required monthly payment, but interest may accrue for longer and increase the total amount repaid. Decide what payment fits your budget, then compare total repayment across offers with the same term. If you compare different terms, treat the monthly payment and total cost as separate trade-offs rather than assuming the smaller payment is the cheaper loan.

Are advertised minimum rates realistic?

A minimum APR is the lowest rate a lender says may be available under specified conditions. It does not show the rate most applicants receive, and it does not establish that you will qualify. The Wells Fargo example illustrates why the qualifications matter: the stated floor applies to a defined loan amount and term, includes a relationship discount, and the lender says at least 10% of applicants approved for those terms received it during the specified April–June 2026 period.

Use a minimum rate as a starting point for comparison, not as a budget assumption. The personalized offer and final disclosure are what matter for your borrowing decision.
