If your budget means a starting MSRP below $40,000, the 2026 model year offers strong compact and midsize choices, plus hybrids and a performance-oriented option. For a practical shortlist, consider the Kia K4 or Nissan Sentra for a lower entry price, the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord for midsize space, and the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid or Honda Civic Hybrid if fuel economy is the priority. These are published starting prices, not out-the-door quotes; compare the exact trim and an itemized local price before deciding.
Which sedans are under $40,000?
The table uses starting prices and ratings published by MotorTrend for 2026 models. Prices are starting figures, not guaranteed transaction prices, and a rating is that publication’s evaluation—not a shared score across publications. Confirm trim, destination, dealer-installed options, taxes and fees in a current quote.

| Honda Accord | $29,690 | 9.1/10; #2 in Best Midsize Sedans | 31–48 combined MPG on Car and Driver’s page; verify trim-specific estimates |

MotorTrend’s prices and ratings are from its 2026 ranking. Its “up to” MPG figures are the values shown on its model pages, not a promise of what every trim will achieve. Car and Driver’s 31–48 combined MPG for the Accord is from its own page; check the exact powertrain and trim for EPA estimates. Ratings from the two publications should not be compared as if they used one scoring system.
How to choose by budget and use
For a lower starting price: Kia K4, Nissan Sentra or Hyundai Elantra
The K4 has the lowest listed starting price in this comparison and MotorTrend’s top compact-sedan ranking. The Sentra is Consumer Reports’ first small-sedan recommendation in its 2026 Buying Guide’s $20,000–$30,000 category, with the Mazda3 and Corolla next. That is Consumer Reports’ recommendation order, not a guarantee that every trim or local quote falls within the category’s price band.

For a compact with a different balance: Corolla, Civic, Jetta or Mazda3
The Corolla and Civic have relatively high published “up to” highway MPG figures in MotorTrend’s comparison. The Mazda3 is also among Consumer Reports’ recommended small sedans. Car and Driver’s evaluation methodology considers acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and enjoyment; use its assessments alongside an in-person check of the features and cabin that matter to you. These are editorial evaluations, not a substitute for comparing the exact versions you would buy.
For more room: Camry or Accord
The Camry is MotorTrend’s top-ranked 2026 midsize sedan, while the Accord is second in that ranking. Car and Driver specifically highlights the Accord’s passenger space, ride-and-handling and fuel economy. If adults will regularly use the back seat or you need more family-hauling room, compare these midsize models with compact sedans in person rather than choosing on base price alone.

For another midsize option: Sonata or K5
The Sonata and K5 have starting prices below $30,000 in MotorTrend’s 2026 comparison. Hyundai’s official 2026 Sonata page lists the SE at $27,300 starting MSRP, SEL Sport FWD at $29,000, SEL Sport AWD at $30,500 and N Line at $35,900. Those manufacturer trim prices differ from MotorTrend’s listed Sonata starting price, illustrating why you should confirm the current trim, market and price definition before comparing offers. Hyundai lists the 2026 Elantra SE at 31 city / 40 highway / 35 combined MPG on its official page.
What if fuel economy is the priority?
Compare powertrains using the same measure and the exact trim’s official EPA estimate. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide lists the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Toyota Corolla Hybrid in its $25,000–$40,000 hybrid category. That category label is not a guarantee that every trim or local transaction price stays below $40,000. Hybrid versions can cost more than a model’s base gasoline version, so compare the price difference with your likely driving and fuel costs.

- Use city, highway and combined MPG values for gasoline and conventional hybrid vehicles, checking the trim and drivetrain.
- Do not compare MPG directly with an electric vehicle’s MPGe or driving range; they describe different things.
- Check whether the fuel-economy figure applies to a hybrid, all-wheel-drive version or another specific configuration.
Does “under $40,000” mean MSRP or the price you pay?
A published starting MSRP is not the same as the amount needed to buy the car. A base model can start below $40,000 while a higher trim, dealer-installed equipment, taxes and registration push the total over that limit. Destination and delivery charges may also be shown separately from a headline starting price. Incentives can change the final number, but eligibility and availability depend on the buyer, vehicle and location.
- Choose the exact model year, trim, drivetrain and required options.
- Ask the dealer for an itemized written quote that separates vehicle price, destination, dealer-installed items, taxes, title and registration.
- Compare quotes on the same equipment and fee basis, and confirm which incentives you qualify for.
- Check current local inventory and the manufacturer’s price page before treating a listed starting price as available to you.
How to compare rankings and claims
MotorTrend and Car and Driver publish separate evaluations and rankings, while Consumer Reports provides category recommendations. Car and Driver says its rankings draw on roughly 200 data points covering acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and enjoyment. Those judgments can help narrow a list, but they do not account for your local dealer quote, insurance, maintenance, route or inventory. Check trim equipment and arrange a drive before treating a ranking as the deciding factor.

Prices and trim details can change during a model year. Mazda North American Operations announced mid-year price adjustments for selected 2026 models, including the Mazda3 Sedan, in a May 4, 2026 release; the available release information does not establish the revised Mazda3 Sedan price. Verify current manufacturer pricing and ask for a local itemized quote rather than relying on an older listing.
