Best Prop Trading Firms: How to Compare Programs and Rules

The best prop trading firm depends on your market and location. Compare the exact loss limits, fees, payout rules, and account structure before enrolling.

There is no single best prop trading firm for every trader. The right choice depends on your location, the market you trade, and whether you can work within the firm’s specific loss limits, payout conditions, and account structure. Compare those details—not headline account sizes or payout screenshots—before paying an evaluation fee.

What makes a prop trading firm worth considering?

A prop firm’s advertised account balance does not tell you how much money you own, can trade live, or can withdraw. Start by finding out what the account actually is: a simulation, a live account, or a program that moves traders between stages. Then read the agreement to understand the basis for any performance reward and when the firm can withhold it or close the account.

For example, Topstep describes a progression from Trading Combine to Express Funded Account and, for some participants, Live Funded Account. Its terms say that “the funds provided to you for Simulated Trading are fictitious”; that statement applies to Topstep’s program, not every firm. Read Topstep’s Terms of Use and its Program Overview for the account stage and conditions that apply.

Compare the program, not just the brand

The available official information supports a useful contrast between Topstep and FTMO’s published rules, but it does not establish a like-for-like ranking. The firms’ products, account terms, geography, and fees are not documented here in enough comparable detail to call one the best overall.

Which rules should you compare before paying?

Loss limits and drawdown

Find out how the maximum loss is calculated and when it is measured. A trailing drawdown, an end-of-day limit, and a static loss limit can produce different outcomes even when the advertised dollar limit is the same. Check whether there is also a daily loss limit, whether it differs between evaluation and funded stages, and what happens when a limit is reached. Topstep’s program overview, for instance, lists both a Maximum Loss Limit and a Daily Loss Limit; consult its current rules for how they apply to the account you are considering.

How to Day Trade for a Living: A Beginner’s Guide to Trading Tools and Tactics, Money Management, Discipline and Trading Psychology (Stock Market Trading and Investing)
  • As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

Evaluation design and costs

Confirm how many stages there are, what targets and minimum trading days apply, whether there is a time limit, and whether the fee recurs. Check reset charges, refund conditions, and whether passing an evaluation creates another paid step. A low initial fee may not represent the total cost if you need resets or continue paying a subscription.

Consistency, restricted trading, and payout access

Read restrictions on consistency, news or overnight trading, prohibited strategies, and coordinated activity. Then trace the payout path: eligibility date, required winning days or minimum profit, any buffer or cap, the split, payment method, and reasons a payout can be denied. Topstep’s overview lists winning-day and consistency requirements; those conditions are specific to its program and may depend on account type. FTMO’s prohibited-practices page likewise describes FTMO-specific restrictions, not a universal list for the industry.

Location and legal terms

Check whether your country, age, and any business entity you plan to use are eligible. Identify the legal entity you contract with and the governing account terms. Do not assume a firm serves US residents—or that a program available in one region is offered on the same terms elsewhere—without confirming it in current official documents.

What do Topstep’s published 2025 figures show?

Topstep’s Terms of Use report these company-published figures for January through December 2025:

  • 16.8% of Trading Combines initiated were completed successfully and afforded the opportunity to advance to the Funded Level.
  • 51.8% of individual participants who entered one or more Trading Combines advanced to the Funded Level in at least one of their Combines.
  • 33.3% of individual participants at the Funded Level received a payout.
  • 0.71% of individual participants trading in an Express Funded Account were called up to a Live Funded Account.

These percentages have different denominators and describe different stages of Topstep’s program. They are firm-reported, not independent industry-wide odds; they cannot be combined into one probability of passing or getting paid, and they should not be applied to other firms. See Topstep’s Terms of Use for the company’s reporting and terms.

How to assess risk without confusing prop programs with investing

The CFTC warns about fraud contexts that include offers involving a proprietary trading firm’s money and profit sharing. That is a reason to verify the counterparty and read the documents, not proof that a particular firm is fraudulent. The CFTC advises readers to check backgrounds and “receive, thoroughly review, and understand all account and risk disclosure documents.” Its Forex Frauds guidance also says that two out of three retail foreign-exchange traders lose money each quarter, based on quarterly profitability data from registered US foreign-exchange dealers. That statistic is about retail forex trading, not prop-firm evaluation pass rates or payouts.

  1. Identify the firm’s contracting entity and confirm it is the one named in the agreement and payment process.
  2. Save the terms, risk disclosures, fee schedule, and payout rules that apply when you enroll.
  3. Check exactly what happens after a loss-limit breach, rule violation, or payout request, including any appeal or review process stated in the terms.
  4. Budget evaluation and reset fees as money you may lose; do not treat a simulated balance or projected payout as income.

A practical way to choose

  1. Filter for fit: confirm the firm accepts traders in your location and supports the market and instruments you trade.
  2. Map the rules: write down the drawdown calculation, daily limits, consistency conditions, restrictions, and funded-stage differences for the exact account type.
  3. Calculate possible cost: include recurring fees, resets, and any additional stage rather than comparing only the first payment.
  4. Trace payout eligibility: note the earliest qualifying point, required conditions, caps, split, and stated grounds for denial.
  5. Verify the account reality: establish whether trading is simulated or live at each stage and what the contract says about any reward.
  6. Compare evidence: prefer current official terms and dated statistics with clear denominators; treat self-reported figures as firm claims, not independent proof.

Some comparison guides, including OpenBook’s guide to prop firms in the USA and PROP NAVI’s guide for US traders, frame the choice around US availability. Their presence does not substitute for checking each firm’s current eligibility and contract terms.
