The available independent ratings are based on data from December 31, 2024, and the provider terms checked on October 8, 2026, postdate April. Those sources can help you compare what matters—total cost, account fit, tax features, portfolio approach, and access to people—but they are not an April 2026 scorecard.
What the available ratings say—and what they do not
Morningstar’s 2025 report gave Vanguard Digital Advisor and Vanguard Personal Advisor Services a High overall assessment. It rated Fidelity Go, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios, Betterment, and Wealthfront Above Average. Morningstar identifies December 31, 2024, as the date of the assessment data, so these are historical evaluations, not rankings of services as they stood in April or October 2026.

A rating is an assessment, not evidence that one service will outperform another or suit every investor. Morningstar notes that digital-advice providers commonly use passive, low-cost ETFs in portfolios tailored to different risk levels, but their allocations and strategies vary. Compare the service’s actual terms and portfolio approach with your needs rather than selecting from a rating alone.
How much does a robo-advisor cost?
Compare the cost of the whole arrangement, not just the advertised advisory fee. Schwab’s comparison page lists these fee figures for selected competitors, based on information Schwab says it obtained on December 1, 2025. Schwab warns that prices and offers can change; treat the figures below as a dated comparison, not verified April 2026 or October 2026 terms.

Schwab says its Intelligent Portfolios service charges no advisory fee or commissions, but that does not mean investing is cost-free. Investors pay the operating expenses of ETFs in their portfolios. Schwab also discloses that the portfolio’s cash allocation is held in a deposit account at Schwab Bank and contributes to the bank’s revenue; it notes that some cash alternatives outside the program may pay a higher yield. The available figures do not establish comparable current all-in costs across these providers.
Build an all-in cost comparison
- Check the advisory fee and whether it changes at balance thresholds or applies only to a particular tier.
- Include the expense ratios of the funds in the recommended portfolio.
- Ask how much the portfolio holds in cash, what yield that cash earns, and whether the allocation is required.
- Check for account, transfer, or other charges, and for a separate price or minimum for any premium or hybrid-advice tier.
Which robo-advisor offers tax-loss harvesting?
Schwab says tax-loss harvesting is available to enrolled Intelligent Portfolios clients with at least $50,000 invested. It also cautions that significant tax benefits are not assured and depend on multiple factors. The stated threshold and enrollment condition are specific to Schwab; the available evidence does not establish a comparable current feature list for other providers.
Rank #2
Tax-loss harvesting involves selling investments at a loss to help offset taxable gains, subject to applicable tax rules. Whether it helps depends on your accounts, transactions, tax situation, and investment plan. Treat the feature as a potential tool, not a guaranteed saving, and check the provider’s current eligibility rules and limitations before relying on it.
What else should you compare before choosing?
Minimums and account coverage
Confirm the amount required to open an account and whether it differs by service tier. Check that the provider supports the account types you intend to use, including taxable and tax-advantaged accounts, and whether a balance threshold unlocks features you care about. Schwab’s stated $5,000 starting minimum applies to Intelligent Portfolios; it does not establish the minimums of the other services.
Rank #3
Portfolio design and rebalancing
Review the recommended asset mix, investment selection, diversification, risk questionnaire, and rebalancing policy. Providers can use different allocations and strategies even when they rely on passive ETFs. Make sure the risk level reflects your capacity to tolerate losses and your time horizon, not simply a preference for a particular recent return.
Digital guidance or a human advisor
Decide whether automated portfolio management is enough or whether you want coaching, planning, or a human advisor. Kiplinger’s 2026 brokerage review discusses both robo and hybrid-advice tiers, including Fidelity Go, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios, and WellsTrade Intuitive Investor, and notes that human-advice access and minimums vary. It does not provide a complete current set of comparable terms here; check each provider’s current description, eligibility, and price before choosing.
Fit with your broader finances
A managed portfolio may not cover specialized planning needs. Consider whether you need help with topics such as retirement-income planning, concentrated stock, complex taxes, or coordinating investments across accounts. Also account for any required cash allocation and whether you are comfortable keeping investments within a provider’s ecosystem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to choose
- Set your requirements: list the account types, minimum amount, tax tools, and level of human help you need.
- Shortlist services that meet them: exclude providers that do not support a required account or whose minimum or service tier is not a fit.
- Verify current terms directly: check each provider’s official fee schedule, minimums, fund expenses, cash policy, account eligibility, tax-feature rules, and advisor access. Do not assume a later or earlier comparison page reflects April 2026 terms.
- Compare portfolios and total costs: look at the investment mix and cash allocation alongside fees, rather than choosing solely by a zero or low advisory-fee headline.
- Recheck before enrolling: confirm that the terms shown at signup match the service and account you intend to open.
The evidence supports a comparison process, not a universal April 2026 pick. Morningstar’s ratings are historical, and Schwab’s competitor fee figures are tied to information obtained in December 2025. Current provider-by-provider terms are needed to make a like-for-like choice.
