There is no single best insurance firm for every U.S. customer. The right choice depends on your state, the type of policy, the company that actually underwrites it, the terms you need, and the quotes available to you. Current rankings can help you decide which firms to investigate, but they do not establish the best price or outcome for your individual circumstances.

Best insurance firms by coverage type

The rankings below answer different questions and use different methods. Treat them as a starting point for comparing insurers—not as a guarantee about your rates, eligibility, service, or future claims experience.

Coverage Published finding What it tells you
Auto Travelers was Insure.com’s top auto insurer in its 2026 ranking. J.D. Power reported overall insurer satisfaction of 644 out of 1,000 in its 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. These are separate findings: Insure.com’s category rank reflects its own methodology, while J.D. Power’s score is an overall study result, not a named best-company verdict.
Homeowners Amica ranked first, Chubb second, and Erie Insurance third in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study, scoring 705, 677, and 676, respectively. Amica was also Insure.com’s top home insurer in its 2026 ranking. Amica led both named studies, but the studies used different methods. Check availability and the quote for your home and location.
Individual life Mutual of Omaha ranked first, State Farm second, and Nationwide third in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, scoring 707, 697, and 695, respectively. The ranking reflects customer experience across several dimensions; it does not show which policy type or contract is right for you.
Health No universal winner is established by the information available here. Compare the specific plan’s network, covered benefits, costs, and eligibility in your state rather than relying on the insurer’s general brand reputation.

How to choose an insurance company

Start with the coverage you need and the state where the policy will apply. Then compare policies on equivalent terms. A lower quote may reflect less coverage, a higher deductible, narrower protections, or different exclusions rather than a better deal.

  1. Identify the policy and the underwriting company. Confirm the state, coverage line, and legal company that will issue the policy. A consumer-facing brand may use more than one underwriting company, so check the entity named in the quote and policy documents.
  2. Make the quotes comparable. Match coverage limits, deductibles, covered property or risks, exclusions, endorsements, and policy period. For life insurance, also compare product type, coverage amount, duration, underwriting requirements, guarantees, and the exact contract.
  3. Review price and renewal terms. Consider the quoted premium alongside how it may change at renewal. A ranking or current quote cannot predict your individual future premium.
  4. Check service and financial information. Look at claims and customer-support experience, complaint information, licensing, and financial-strength evidence. AM Best describes a Best’s Credit Rating as a forward-looking, independent, objective opinion about relative creditworthiness. It is one input—not a substitute for comparing coverage, price, service, or claims experience.
  5. Verify the company with the regulator. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) directs consumers to state insurance departments for filing complaints and offers a Consumer Insurance Search for company complaints, licenses, and financial-health information. Use these resources to check the actual underwriting company and the state where you are buying coverage.

What the auto insurance findings mean

J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study reported overall insurer satisfaction of 644 on a 1,000-point scale. It also found that 30% of customers reported an insurer-initiated premium increase. Customers reporting an increase had a price-satisfaction score 155 points lower than customers whose premiums stayed the same or decreased. Those study results support comparing both price and service, but they do not predict how a particular policyholder’s premium will change.

Travelers’ position as Insure.com’s 2026 top auto insurer is a result of that publisher’s scoring approach, not a guarantee that Travelers will offer the lowest quote or best fit in every state. Compare the limits and deductibles you need, and check the underwriting company and policy terms before choosing.

What the homeowners insurance findings mean

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study reported that 47% of homeowners insurance customers experienced a premium increase in the prior year. Its results came from online interviews with 14,511 homeowners and renters conducted from July 2024 through May 2025. Amica ranked first in the homeowners segment, followed by Chubb and Erie Insurance. Insure.com also named Amica its top home insurer in its 2026 ranking, using a separate method.

A study ranking cannot establish whether a company will insure a particular home or offer suitable terms. Availability and risk vary by state and property. Request a quote using accurate information about your home, and compare the covered risks, exclusions, deductibles, limits, and endorsements—not just the premium.

What the individual life insurance findings mean

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study ranked Mutual of Omaha first, State Farm second, and Nationwide third. The study covered 5,065 individual life insurance customers surveyed from August 2024 through July 2025. It considered trust, value, ease of doing business, people, products, service, problem resolution, and digital channels, so the ranking is not simply a comparison of prices.

Before comparing providers, decide what kind of life policy you are considering and how much coverage and how long a term you need. Then review eligibility and underwriting, policy guarantees, and the actual contract. A company’s study rank does not show whether a particular product or its terms suit your needs.

How to interpret insurer rankings

Insure.com’s 2026 auto and home rankings combine survey results (40%), AM Best information (25%), average premiums (20%), and NAIC complaints (15%). The company says its survey involved more than 2,000 insurance consumers surveyed through Dynata in 2025. Its methodology describes different calculations for life and health. These weights are the publisher’s editorial choices, not an industry-wide standard.

J.D. Power’s studies use separate samples and measures. Its home and life findings describe customer responses in the stated studies; they do not guarantee that an insurer will perform the same way for every customer or policy. J.D. Power notes in its study materials that scores are numerical rankings and may not necessarily be statistically significant. Treat small score gaps cautiously and use the results to identify firms for further comparison rather than to declare a universal winner.

Choosing health coverage requires a plan-level comparison

A health insurer’s brand reputation does not tell you whether a particular plan includes your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, or needed services. Insure.com’s health methodology says it incorporates survey responses, affordability, NAIC complaints, and NCQA data, but those factors cannot replace checking the plan itself. Compare the available plans for your state and enrollment circumstances, including networks, covered benefits, costs, and eligibility.
