There is no independently verified public figure for Bashar al-Assad’s personal net worth. The most authoritative public benchmark is a 2022 U.S. Department of State estimate that places the Assad family’s combined net worth between $1 billion and $2 billion. The Department calls that estimate inexact and says it cannot independently corroborate it, so it should not be reported as Bashar al-Assad’s personal fortune.
What is Bashar al-Assad’s net worth?
His personal net worth is not established in the public record. The frequently cited $1 billion to $2 billion figure refers to the Assad family as a whole, not to Bashar alone. In a 2022 congressional report, the U.S. Department of State said estimates based on open-source information generally put the family’s net worth in that range, while emphasizing that the estimate is inexact and cannot be independently corroborated. Read the State Department report.
The report considered the finances of Bashar and Asma al-Assad, his brother Maher, sister Bushra, maternal cousins Rami and Ihab Makhlouf, paternal uncle Rifaat, and paternal cousins Dhu al-Himma and Riad Shalish. It also assessed Bashar and Asma as exerting significant influence over much of Syria’s wealth. Influence over a country’s wealth is not the same as legal ownership of those assets, and neither establishes an individual balance sheet.
Why the family estimate is hard to verify
A net-worth figure requires evidence about assets and liabilities attributable to a specific person. The State Department’s estimate is instead a broad, open-source family estimate, and its report does not provide an audited breakdown of who owns what or how debts affect the total.

The Department also assessed that outside-Syria assets not seized or blocked are likely held under false names or through other people to obscure ownership and evade sanctions. That explains a verification challenge, but it does not prove that a particular hidden holding exists or establish its value.
Do asset freezes show how much Assad is worth?
No. A freeze restricts dealings with assets; it does not establish the assets’ total value or prove that every restricted asset belongs personally to Bashar al-Assad.

On March 7, 2025, Switzerland’s Federal Council announced an additional freeze on assets of Assad and his entourage. It said the measure was intended to prevent funds of the former government from flowing out of Switzerland, but it did not give a Bashar-specific amount. See the Swiss Federal Council announcement.
Sanctions have also changed since Assad’s fall. The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control says the United States ended comprehensive sanctions on Syria and blocking sanctions on the Syrian government, while retaining list-based measures against former president Bashar al-Assad and other specified actors. Its Syria sanctions page reflects regulatory changes effective in 2025 and updates through September 2026. Check OFAC’s Syria sanctions page.

A 2019 Global Witness investigation reported at least US$40 million in Moscow real estate connected to Assad-related members of the Makhlouf family. That figure concerns alleged assets linked to relatives in the wider family network; it is not a valuation of Bashar’s personal holdings and should not be added to the State Department’s family estimate. What the available evidence supports
- Personal figure: No independently verified public valuation of Bashar al-Assad’s individual net worth is established by the cited official materials.
- Family benchmark: The State Department’s 2022 open-source estimate is $1 billion to $2 billion for the Assad family combined; it is expressly described as inexact and uncorroborated.
- Frozen assets: Swiss, U.S. and EU measures describe legal restrictions, not a complete valuation of assets owned by Assad personally or the family.
