For a broad spot swap, compare an automated market maker (AMM) such as Uniswap with an aggregator such as CoW Protocol. For stablecoins or other correlated assets, consider a pool designed for those trades, such as Curve’s StableSwap. Perpetual-futures platforms—including Hyperliquid, dYdX and GMX—are a separate, leveraged product, not a substitute for a basic token swap.
The deciding factor is the trade you are actually making: the asset and network, the route and quoted output, total transaction costs, and the risks and execution rules. Fees, liquidity and routes change, and no comparable live snapshot establishes one venue as the cheapest or best overall. Check the quote in the interface before signing.
Which decentralized exchange fits your trade?
| Your trade | Venue or design to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary spot swap | Uniswap or another AMM; an aggregator such as CoW Protocol may also be worth comparing. | Exact token and network, available route, quoted output, price impact, network costs and approval request. |
| Stablecoin or correlated-asset swap | Curve’s StableSwap pools are designed for pegged or correlated assets. | Whether the assets are actually correlated, pool depth, quote, costs and the possibility that a peg can fail. |
| Swap where you want an aggregated route | CoW Protocol uses trade intents and batch auctions. 1inch and Jupiter are also identified as aggregators in different contexts; Jupiter is Solana-focused. | Supported network, route, quoted terms, and the interface’s explanation of execution, settlement and cancellation. |
| Leveraged perpetual futures | A derivatives-specific venue such as Hyperliquid, dYdX or GMX. | Leverage, funding, liquidation rules, market depth, oracle and execution design, fees, and whether the venue is available to you. |
| Swap on a BNB-oriented or supported multi-chain network | PancakeSwap lists eleven chains in its official product overview accessed October 8, 2026; its list may change. | Confirm that the exact network and token are supported in the current interface, then compare the route, quote and network costs. |
These are categories to compare, not a live performance ranking. The available sources do not provide a like-for-like current comparison of fees, liquidity, volume or execution across these venues.
What “best” means for a spot swap
For a spot trade, the useful comparison is the final trade you can execute—not a platform’s headline fee in isolation. A route with a lower displayed fee can still deliver less if it has worse pricing or price impact, or if the transaction requires more network fees. Look at the amount you will receive and the full costs shown for that specific trade.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Asset and network: Confirm the token and chain in the interface. A familiar token name does not by itself verify the token contract or network.
- Route and depth: Check which pool or liquidity sources the route uses and whether the trade is large relative to available liquidity.
- Quoted output: Review the expected amount received, minimum received or limit price, and displayed price impact. These are trade-specific and can change before execution.
- Total cost: Account for network fees as well as any protocol or route costs shown. A fee figure from another chain, pool or time is not a like-for-like comparison.
- Execution features: If you need a limit condition, batch execution or a particular settlement behavior, check whether the venue supports it and what the current order terms mean.
Best for broad AMM spot swaps: Uniswap
Uniswap is a strong starting point when you want to compare a direct spot swap through an AMM. Uniswap Labs describes its protocol as token-pair pools funded by liquidity providers, with smart contracts enabling automated swaps rather than matching orders on a traditional order book. The protocol’s developer overview identifies v2, v3 and v4. It recommends v4 for new integrations, a recommendation for builders that does not establish v4 as the best version or route for every user trade.
The documented architecture includes a PoolManager for v4 pools, hooks that allow customizable pool behavior, and flash accounting that defers token transfers until transaction completion. Uniswap’s Universal Router can compose swaps across v2, v3 and v4; Permit2 provides a signature-based transfer and allowance system. Those are design details, not a guarantee that a particular interface or trade uses every component.

For an individual swap, use the quoted route and total costs—not the version number alone—to decide. Check the token and network, the pool or route depth, price impact, network fee and any approval request in the interface you are using.
Best to consider for stablecoins and correlated assets: Curve
Curve’s documentation describes a DEX and AMM for trading stablecoins and volatile assets. Its pool guide distinguishes StableSwap, intended for pegged or correlated assets such as stablecoins and staked/unstaked ETH pairs, from CryptoSwap, intended for more volatile or uncorrelated assets.

That specialization makes Curve relevant when the assets in your trade are expected to track one another. It does not make every stablecoin pair safe or guarantee a better quote. Compare the specific pool’s depth, the output and costs, and the risk that a token may lose its peg. Curve also has lending and stablecoin products; those are distinct from its DEX swap function.
Best to consider for aggregated or intent-based execution: CoW Protocol
CoW Protocol’s documentation describes a trade-intent model: users submit signed intents, and solvers first look for matches between orders in a batch. If orders do not match, solvers search on-chain and off-chain liquidity, including AMMs, other aggregators and private market makers. This is a different execution approach from simply choosing one pool directly.

CoW describes itself as a meta-DEX aggregation protocol intended to find better prices. That is the protocol’s own characterization, not evidence that every order will outperform every direct swap or other aggregator. Compare the actual quote and terms for your order, including any limit condition, supported network, settlement and cancellation behavior. 1inch and Jupiter are other aggregation options identified in a comparative source, with Jupiter described as Solana-focused; those descriptions do not establish a current ranking.

Hyperliquid, dYdX and GMX are examples of platforms for perpetual futures, which are leveraged derivatives. Their infrastructure differs: the comparative source distinguishes order-book approaches from pooled-liquidity approaches, while dYdX’s documentation describes dYdX Chain as open-source software for a decentralized perpetuals exchange built on Cosmos SDK and CometBFT, with an order-book and matching-engine design.

Do not compare a perps venue with a spot-swap venue as if they offer the same product. Before opening a derivatives position, verify the current funding, leverage and liquidation rules, market depth, fees, oracle and execution assumptions, and any jurisdictional eligibility that applies to you. The available sources do not establish a risk-adjusted winner or a current globally applicable fee, leverage or access comparison.
How to compare the live trade
- Choose the correct product: Decide whether you need a spot swap, a correlated-asset pool, an aggregated route or a perpetual-futures position. Do not select a perps venue for a routine token swap.
- Confirm the network and token: Check the chain and token contract in the venue’s current interface. Verify the official site before connecting a wallet.
- Request the same trade on relevant venues: Use the same input amount, token and network where possible. Compare quoted output, minimum received or limit terms, route and price impact.
- Add all displayed costs: Consider protocol or route costs and network fees. Recheck the quote immediately before signing because routes and prices can change.
- Inspect the wallet request: Review what you are signing, including the approval spender and allowance. CoW Protocol’s tutorial warns that its default sell-token allowance can be unlimited and advises against signing if the spender address is uncertain. Approval mechanics vary by protocol, so do not assume every venue uses the same contracts or settings.
- Decide whether the trade is worth the risk: If the token, route, permission or execution terms are unclear, do not proceed until you understand them.
Self-custody does not remove trading risk
Using a decentralized exchange typically means authorizing transactions from your own wallet; it does not mean every part of the trade is safe. PancakeSwap says users trade directly from their wallet and that it does not hold their funds while they trade. That describes custody during trading, not protection from smart-contract vulnerabilities, malicious tokens, excessive approvals, phishing, price impact or a misleading signing request.
A 2024 study by Jiaqi Chen and coauthors analyzed 60 million transactions and reported 671,400 unfair trades across six measured DEXs. The authors attributed 55,000 instances with high confidence to token theft, with losses exceeding US$3.88 million. These are findings from the study’s dataset and identification method—not a probability of loss for a present-day swap or an industry-wide current loss rate.
Quick Recap
- Use the venue’s verified official domain and confirm the token contract and network.
- Read the quoted output, minimum received or limit price, price impact and network cost before signing.
- Check the approval spender and requested allowance; avoid approving or signing anything you do not understand.
- For a derivative, understand leverage, funding and liquidation terms before placing an order.
- A hardware wallet is an optional way to manage signing, not a guarantee against malicious transactions, protocol risks or market losses.
