There is no single best digital insurer for every U.S. shopper. In JD Power’s 2026 U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study, Amica ranked highest for digital service, while National General ranked highest for digital shopping. Those rankings measure different parts of the online experience—not price, coverage quality, or whether a company is available or right for you.
This guide focuses on U.S. consumer insurance, especially auto and home, the lines covered by the cited study. Use the rankings as a starting point, then compare equivalent policies, claims support, state availability, and data practices.
What “best digital insurance” means
A digital insurer may let you get a quote, buy a policy, manage documents, pay bills, and report or track a claim online or in an app. But a smooth app is only one part of an insurance decision. The policy still needs to fit your risks, and the company must be licensed to insure you where you live.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) defines insurtech as technologies that can make buying, using, and understanding insurance easier, faster, and more personalized. Technology can streamline service, but it does not make coverage terms or insurer reliability less important.

2026 digital-experience leaders: shopping versus service
JD Power’s 2026 U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study separates digital shopping from digital service. Its results are useful for identifying companies that performed well in those specific experiences; they are not a universal ranking of the best insurer.
| Experience measured | Top-ranked provider | Other leading scores | What the segment measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital shopping | National General — 553 | AAA’s Automobile Club Group — 546; Erie Insurance — 545 | Design, information, quoting, and system performance |
| Digital service | Amica — 730 | Nationwide — 723; GEICO — 717 | Design, information, tools and capabilities, and system performance |
Scores are from JD Power’s 2026 study. The study reported that 47% of new auto and home policies were purchased digitally. It was based on 11,553 evaluations fielded from January through March 2026. Average digital-service satisfaction was 695 on a 1,000-point scale, four points below the prior year.

How to compare digital insurance options
- Choose the insurance line and confirm availability. Compare auto with auto or homeowners with homeowners, and check that the insurer and the specific policy are available in your state. The issuing insurer may vary by location.
- Make the coverage comparable. Match limits, deductibles, exclusions, and endorsements as closely as possible. A lower quote may reflect less protection or a higher deductible rather than a better deal.
- Compare quotes using the same details. Enter consistent information about the people, property, vehicles, and coverage being insured. Review eligibility requirements and discounts instead of assuming they apply to every shopper.
- Try the digital tasks you expect to use. Check whether the site or app lets you revise a quote, understand coverage choices, access policy documents, change policy details, pay bills, and report or track claims.
- Check how to reach a person. Find the route to human help for a coverage question, billing issue, or claim. A digital-first process is less useful if the support channel you need is difficult to find.
- Verify the insurer independently. Use the NAIC’s consumer resources to check licensing and complaint information; review financial-health information through suitable regulator resources where available. Do not treat an app’s design or a third-party ranking as a substitute for these checks.
- Read the privacy and data disclosures. Understand what information the insurer collects, how it may be used, and whether automated tools affect decisions that matter to you.
What digital insurance can—and cannot—make easier
Insurtech can make quoting, routine service, and access to policy information more convenient. Some products also use behavior-based pricing or technology intended to help prevent losses. Those features can be useful, but their value depends on the policy, the customer’s needs, and the terms governing the data involved.

Insurers use artificial intelligence in areas including underwriting, pricing, customer service, claims handling, and fraud detection. The NAIC adopted its Model Bulletin on the Use of Artificial Intelligence by Insurance Companies in December 2023 and has described regulator work in 2025 and 2026 on an AI Systems Evaluation Tool. Automated decisions do not remove the need to understand your coverage or how personal information is used. Consider whether the insurer explains its data practices clearly and offers a way to raise questions about a decision.
Privacy and trust checks before you buy
- Sensitive data: Consider whether the information requested is proportionate to the product and whether the insurer explains its use.
- Cybersecurity: Look for clear information about protecting account and personal data, and use secure account practices such as a unique password.
- Transparency: Make sure you can understand the coverage, exclusions, pricing factors, and relevant automated processes before committing.
- Potential bias: Automated systems can raise fairness concerns. A digital experience score does not assess whether an individual pricing or underwriting decision is fair for your circumstances.

If you prioritize getting a quote or buying online, National General’s leading shopping result in JD Power’s 2026 study is a reasonable place to begin your comparison. If ongoing digital policy service matters most, consider Amica’s leading service result. Then compare each available policy against alternatives on the same coverage terms, price, claims access, licensing, and data practices. The study’s leaders are starting points—not a recommendation that either is best for every consumer.
