The right choice depends on how you place orders, how you fund and withdraw AUD, which assets and features you need, and what protections apply to the specific service. Current provider-published schedules show meaningfully different costs: CoinSpot lists 0.1% for market orders but 1% for several simple and conditional transactions, while CoinJar distinguishes conversions from exchange trading. These are useful comparisons, not an independent ranking or proof that one provider is cheapest overall.
How to compare Australian crypto exchanges
Compare the transaction you expect to make, rather than choosing by a headline rate. A provider’s published trading fee may not capture the full cost of buying or selling: the order method, any spread, payment route and later withdrawal can all matter. The fee figures below are provider-published schedules checked on 8 October 2026; they are not the result of an independent fee test and can change.
- Match the fee to your order type. A market order, an instant conversion and a card purchase may carry different charges on the same platform. Check whether a quoted rate applies to your intended transaction.
- Check the total AUD path. Compare deposit methods and withdrawal methods separately. A free deposit does not mean every way of taking money out is free.
- Check crypto withdrawals by asset and network. Fees and available networks can differ. Confirm the exact route shown for the coin you intend to transfer before sending.
- Confirm the features and assets you actually need. Verify current availability for the Australian account, including the specific asset, order types and other services you plan to use.
- Consider practical access and protections. Usability and support matter, but so does the legal status of the exact service and the protections that apply to it.
Published fee examples: what the schedules show
This comparison is limited to the fee information identified on the providers’ pages. The rates are not directly interchangeable: for example, a conversion fee is not the same type of charge as a spot maker or taker fee.

Which exchange has the lowest fees?
The schedules do not establish one lowest-fee Australian exchange for every customer. CoinSpot’s 0.1% market-order rate is lower than its 1% instant and conditional-order rates; CoinJar likewise lists separate rates for conversions, card purchases and its exchange. Kraken’s entry spot tier is a maker-taker schedule, and its page does not confirm that the same services or pricing are available to every Australian account. Independent Reserve’s cited figures answer a different question: AUD withdrawal costs, not ordinary spot-trading fees.

To compare providers for your own use, identify the exact transaction and calculate its likely cost using the fee and any spread displayed before you confirm. Then include the AUD funding or withdrawal route you expect to use, plus any crypto-network fee if you will move coins off-platform. Recheck the provider’s current schedule and the final order screen before acting.
Is a crypto exchange regulated in Australia?
Regulation is service-specific; it is not a blanket guarantee that an exchange, every token it lists or every customer loss is covered. ASIC explains that the legal classification of a digital asset or related arrangement depends on its rights, benefits, and how it is offered and used. A platform facilitating trades in a financial product may face licensing requirements, but that does not give every token or exchange service the same regulatory status.

ASIC states: “Consumers are only protected by the financial services laws ASIC administers to the extent that any digital assets and related services are subject to those laws.” Its guidance also says Australian laws may apply to services supplied from offshore into Australia. The information sheet was updated in October 2025, with minor edits to references in April 2026: ASIC: Digital assets—financial products and services.
Do not treat an exchange’s marketing, registration or licensing language as proof of universal protection. The Australian government’s AUSTRAC register should be checked for the relevant legal entity, and a registration claim should not be confused with financial-services licensing or a guarantee about custody and loss. The fee sources cited here do not establish the current registration status of the named providers.

When to consider moving crypto to self-custody
Keeping crypto on an exchange and moving it to a wallet involve different responsibilities. Self-custody is optional; it is not a requirement for choosing an exchange and does not remove all risk. A hardware wallet can keep signing keys under the user’s control, but the user must protect the recovery phrase and handle transfers carefully. Losing or exposing credentials can result in loss.
Ledger describes the Nano X as a hardware wallet and signer, with Bluetooth, and outlines withdrawing crypto from an exchange to an address generated in its app: Ledger: Classic Ledger Nano range. If you choose a wallet, confirm the asset and network are compatible at both ends and follow the wallet maker’s current instructions before transferring.

What these fee comparisons cannot tell you
Published fees alone do not establish an exchange’s security history, liquidity, customer-support performance, full asset availability or dispute outcomes. They also do not show which service is suitable for your financial circumstances. Treat the figures as a dated starting point for checking costs, not as a comprehensive quality ranking or personalised financial advice.
