Their headline pricing is similar: each offers a spread-only account and a raw-spread account with a separate commission. The meaningful differences are in regulation, platform choice, market range, execution setup, and the entity that accepts your application.
There is no universal winner. Pepperstone is usually the more rounded choice for traders who want broad platform support, a polished account experience, and strong regulatory coverage in certain regions. IC Markets is often attractive to algorithmic and high-volume forex traders who prioritise raw pricing, MetaTrader automation, and a large selection of trading tools.
Quick verdict
| Priority | Likely better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| TradingView, cTrader and MetaTrader choice | Pepperstone | Offers a broad platform lineup, including its own trading interface in some regions. |
| Automated forex trading | IC Markets | Its MetaTrader and cTrader offering is particularly popular with Expert Advisors, bots and VPS users. |
| Regulatory reassurance | Depends on your country | The legal entity—not the global brand—determines your protections and leverage. |
| Low advertised raw spreads | Neither automatically | Both advertise spreads from 0.0, but commission, slippage and the actual spread during your trading hours determine the result. |
| Share and non-forex CFD variety | Usually Pepperstone | Pepperstone generally presents a broader multi-asset range, although availability varies by region. |
| High-frequency forex trading | IC Markets may suit better | Its account structure and infrastructure are aimed strongly at active forex traders. |
For a new trader, Pepperstone is the safer general recommendation only if its local entity offers the protections and products you want. For a trader running EAs on MT4 or MT5, IC Markets deserves a close look. In either case, compare the account agreement and live pricing for your country before depositing.
Regulation comes before spreads
Both brands operate through multiple companies. You may not receive the same leverage, negative-balance protection, compensation arrangements, product list or dispute process as a client in another country.

#1 Best Overall
- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
During the application process, identify:
- The full legal name of the company opening your account.
- The regulator supervising that company.
- Whether you are classified as a retail or professional client.
- The applicable negative-balance, client-money and compensation rules.
- The leverage limits and instruments available to that entity.
A global regulator list on a broker’s website is not proof that your account receives every listed regulator’s protections. Read the client agreement and risk disclosure attached to your application.
Neither Pepperstone nor IC Markets should be assumed to accept US retail clients for forex and CFD trading. US residents should check the live application and local regulatory register rather than rely on an international website or an affiliate review.
Account types and minimum deposits
The basic account comparison is straightforward:
| Feature | Pepperstone | IC Markets |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pricing | Spread includes the broker’s markup; no separate forex commission on the standard model. | Spread-only account, generally with no separate forex commission. |
| Raw pricing | Razor account: raw or near-raw spread plus commission. | Raw Spread account: raw or near-raw spread plus commission. |
| Smallest normal trade size | Typically 0.01 lot, subject to instrument rules. | Typically 0.01 lot, subject to instrument rules. |
| Minimum opening deposit | Often marketed as no fixed minimum, although margin requirements still apply. | Often marketed with a low minimum or no practical minimum, depending on entity and funding method. |
Do not confuse a broker’s account-opening minimum with the money needed to trade safely. A 0.01-lot position may be technically possible with a small balance, but spread costs, floating loss and margin requirements can make that balance unsuitable.
Raw spreads: how the cost really works
On a raw account, your round-trip cost is approximately:
Spread cost + opening commission + closing commission + overnight funding + any conversion cost.
For example, suppose a broker charges $3.50 per standard lot per side. A one-lot trade costs $7 in commission before the spread. If the effective spread is 0.2 pips on EUR/USD, that adds roughly $2, producing an initial round-trip cost of about $9, before slippage and financing.
Rank #2
That calculation changes when:
- You trade a mini-lot or micro-lot.
- Your account is denominated in a different currency.
- You use cTrader or TradingView, where commission conventions can differ.
- You trade an exotic currency pair with a wider spread.
- You hold the position past the daily financing cut-off.
Pepperstone and IC Markets both advertise very low minimum spreads on major currency pairs. A minimum spread is not the same as the spread you will receive continuously. Compare average or recorded spreads for the exact pair, session and account type you use. A broker that is cheaper during the London-New York overlap may not be cheaper during the Asian session.
Which broker is cheaper?
For major forex pairs, the two brokers are often close enough that trading behaviour matters more than the advertised difference. A trader opening and closing several positions each day should compare:
- Raw spread at the time of the intended trade.
- Commission per side in the account’s base currency.
- Slippage on market orders and stop-losses.
- Swap or overnight financing for positions held after the daily rollover.
- Currency-conversion charges when depositing, withdrawing or trading in a different currency.
The standard account may be simpler for occasional traders because the cost is incorporated into the spread. The raw account is often more economical for active traders, but only after adding the commission to the spread.
Platforms and automated trading
Pepperstone
Pepperstone commonly supports MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and TradingView, with availability depending on the local entity. Some regions also provide a proprietary Pepperstone platform or app.
This makes Pepperstone a flexible option if you want to start with TradingView and later move to MT5, or if you want cTrader’s interface without leaving the broker. Check whether the account type you select is available on the platform you prefer; platform-specific commission and instrument lists may differ.
IC Markets
IC Markets is strongly associated with MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and cTrader. It is commonly considered by traders who use Expert Advisors, custom indicators, automated strategies, FIX/API connectivity or a virtual private server.

Before opening an account for automation, check the broker’s current policy on scalping, hedging, news trading, latency-sensitive strategies and VPS access. A platform being available does not guarantee that every instrument, order type or server feature is identical across entities.
Markets and product range
Pepperstone generally has the stronger retail multi-asset presentation, with forex alongside indices, commodities, cryptocurrencies, shares and other CFDs in eligible regions. IC Markets also offers forex, metals, indices, commodities, digital assets and share-related CFDs, but the exact list depends heavily on the client’s country and platform.
Count the instruments you can actually trade—not the headline number on the home page. A product may be unavailable to retail clients in your jurisdiction, restricted to one platform, or subject to different trading hours and margin rules.
For a forex-only trader, the number of available share CFDs is largely irrelevant. For a trader building a diversified CFD watchlist, Pepperstone may have the edge, but you should search both brokers for the specific ticker, contract size, commission and overnight rate.
Leverage and risk
Neither broker’s maximum advertised leverage should decide the comparison. Retail leverage is normally capped by the regulator overseeing your account, while higher limits may be available only through another entity or to professional clients.
Leverage magnifies losses as quickly as gains. If a $1,000 account uses 30:1 leverage, a 1% adverse move on a fully leveraged $30,000 position represents a $300 loss before costs. At 100:1 leverage, the same account can reach dangerous exposure with a much smaller deposit.
Rank #4
Prefer the broker that provides the legal protections, margin rules and risk controls appropriate for your situation—not the one advertising the largest ratio.
Deposits, withdrawals and account administration
Both brokers usually support cards, bank transfers and online payment methods, but the choices and processing times vary by country. Use a payment method in your own name. Third-party deposits can cause compliance checks or withdrawal delays.
Before funding, confirm:
- Whether the broker charges a withdrawal fee for your chosen method.
- Whether an intermediary bank can deduct a wire fee.
- How profits are returned after a card deposit.
- The minimum withdrawal amount.
- Whether a dormant or archived account can be reactivated.
Broker websites sometimes show different figures for minimum deposits, fees or processing times on regional pages. Treat the terms shown in your client area and account agreement as controlling.
Who should choose Pepperstone?
Pepperstone is the better fit when you want:
- A broad choice between MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView.
- A broker with a strong multi-asset offering in your region.
- A straightforward standard-versus-raw account decision.
- A more general-purpose platform and account experience rather than a forex-only setup.
It is not automatically the best choice for every country. Confirm the local entity, leverage, protections and costs before applying.
Who should choose IC Markets?
IC Markets may be the better fit when you want:
- Active forex trading on MT4, MT5 or cTrader.
- Raw-spread pricing and a commission model suited to frequent trading.
- Expert Advisors, VPS use or other automated strategies.
- A broker whose product and infrastructure emphasis is closely aligned with forex execution.
Its raw pricing still needs to be tested against your pair, trading hours and order size. Low spreads cannot remove slippage, financing or the risk of automated losses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test both brokers before committing money
- Open demo accounts on the same platform, preferably with the same account currency.
- Record the bid-ask spread for your three most-traded instruments at the times you normally trade.
- Place identical small test orders and compare execution, rejected orders and slippage.
- Check the swap rate before holding a position overnight or through the weekend.
- Read the withdrawal terms and make a small withdrawal before depositing a larger amount.
- Save the legal entity, regulator and client agreement shown during onboarding.
A demo account can reveal platform behaviour, but it cannot prove that live execution, liquidity or slippage will be identical. Treat it as a usability test, not evidence of guaranteed trading results.

FAQ
Is Pepperstone safer than IC Markets?
Neither brand is universally safer. Safety depends on the legal entity that accepts you, its regulator, client-money rules, negative-balance protection and compensation arrangements. Compare those details for your country before looking at spreads.
Which has lower forex spreads, Pepperstone or IC Markets?
Both offer raw-spread accounts that can show very low spreads on major pairs. The cheaper broker depends on the actual spread, commission, account currency, platform, slippage and holding period. Compare total round-trip cost rather than the phrase “from 0.0 pips.”
Does IC Markets have a minimum deposit?
IC Markets has commonly promoted a low minimum opening deposit, but the required amount and funding rules can vary by entity. Check the live application and client-area funding page for your country rather than relying on an old comparison.
Does Pepperstone have a minimum deposit?
Pepperstone has commonly stated that it does not impose a fixed minimum deposit, but you still need enough money to satisfy margin requirements and absorb normal trading losses and costs.
Which is better for beginners?
Pepperstone may be easier for a beginner who wants a broad platform choice and a simple standard account. However, beginners should first use a demo account, avoid excessive leverage and understand spread, margin, stop-out and overnight financing costs.
Which broker is better for Expert Advisors?
IC Markets is often considered by automated forex traders because of its MT4, MT5, cTrader and VPS-oriented setup. Pepperstone also supports automated trading on several platforms. Compare server location, VPS terms, execution rules and the exact platform before choosing.
Can US residents open a Pepperstone or IC Markets account?
Do not assume that either broker accepts US retail clients. Eligibility depends on the broker’s current local licensing and application process. US residents should verify availability with the relevant regulator and live application.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Pepperstone if you value platform flexibility and a broader general CFD offering. Choose IC Markets if your priority is active, automated forex trading on MT4, MT5 or cTrader. The final decision should be based on the entity serving you and the total cost of your actual strategy—not the broker with the lowest advertised spread or highest leverage.
