There is not enough independent evidence to name a definitive “best” background check service for 2022: the available comparison is a provider-produced GoodHire PDF, and it does not establish the original article’s scoring criteria or rankings. For a useful choice today, first distinguish employment screening from tenant screening and personal people-search services, then compare lawful use, included searches, coverage, workflow, dispute handling, and total cost.
Why a definitive 2022 ranking is not supported
GoodHire published a comparison PDF in Spring 2022, but it is a provider-produced source and does not establish a neutral scoring method or the rank order of the article named in this title. Current vendor information cannot fill that historical gap: it describes offerings and prices now, not necessarily what was available or charged in 2022.
Accordingly, this comparison does not assign a winner or reconstruct a ranking. It offers a framework for choosing a service by use case and identifies the current facts available for Checkr, while keeping historical claims separate from current information.
Choose by screening purpose, not by brand name
Employment screening
A service used to provide reports for hiring decisions may be a consumer reporting agency and must follow applicable Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requirements. The FTC states: “And, if you market your reports to be used to screen tenants or employees, you are a consumer reporting agency and you must follow the requirements of the FCRA.” FTC announcement, 2023.

#1 Best Overall
For employment checks, assess whether the provider supports the employer’s FCRA-related workflow, the specific checks needed, identity matching, access to reports, and dispute processes. The CFPB’s Checkr listing identifies Checkr’s employment-screening role and explains report access and dispute information.
Tenant screening
Housing decisions are a separate use case. Confirm that the service and report are intended for tenant screening and understand the obligations that apply to the particular decision. The FTC’s FCRA guidance and landlord guidance are relevant starting points. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction, so these federal resources are not a substitute for checking applicable state and local rules.
Rank #2
- Background Checks
- Criminal Records Checks
- Arrest Records
Personal people searches
People-search products should not be treated as substitutes for employment or tenant-screening services. The FTC’s 2023 action against TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate concerned allegations about accuracy representations and FCRA compliance; the companies agreed to pay $5.8 million to settle the action. That settlement is not an industry-wide error-rate measure, nor does it establish that every report from either company is inaccurate. It does underscore why intended use, compliance, and accuracy controls matter when choosing a service.
How to compare services for a real screening need
Package names alone do not show whether a report is suitable. Compare the actual searches and workflow the provider offers for your use case.
Rank #3
- Permitted use and compliance workflow: Confirm that the service is designed for the employment or housing decision at hand, rather than for personal information searches.
- Searches and geographic scope: Inspect which records and searches are included at each tier, and what locations are covered. A “national” label or a package name does not tell you which searches are actually performed.
- Identity matching and accuracy controls: Ask how the provider distinguishes people with similar names and handles mismatched or incomplete records.
- Court-record sourcing and timing: Understand where court records come from, which jurisdictions require extra steps, and how those steps affect turnaround. Do not assume a quick estimate means every court search will be equally fast.
- Hiring workflow and integrations: For employers, check whether the service fits existing applicant-tracking or HR systems and how candidates complete required steps.
- Report access and disputes: Find out how a person can access a report and dispute information they believe is wrong. Checkr’s CFPB listing provides information about these rights and the company’s role.
- End-to-end cost: Include the base report, selected add-ons, and any pass-through fees. A starting price is not necessarily the final price for the searches required.
What Checkr currently publishes
Checkr’s US pricing page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists these advertised starting prices. They are current figures, not 2022 prices or all-in quotes; Checkr warns that pass-through fees may apply. Checkr pricing.
| Checkr US tier | Advertised starting price per report |
|---|---|
| Basic | From $29.99 |
| Essential | From $59.99 |
| Complete | From $94.99 |
The figures describe the provider’s current starting prices; they do not establish which tier is appropriate, the total cost for a particular screening package, or an independent measure of accuracy or value. Compare the tier’s included searches and any applicable fees against the checks you actually need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available evidence supports
The sources support a use-case-based comparison, not a ranked list of the best services in 2022. Checkr has documented current US starting prices and is identified by the CFPB as an employment-screening provider. Those facts make it possible to evaluate its published offer, but they do not independently prove that it is more accurate, affordable, or suitable than another provider. The available evidence does not establish a neutral scoring rubric or a definitive winner.
GoodHire’s Spring 2022 PDF is useful only as a provider comparison, not as independent proof of a category ranking. Its current guide is likewise provider-published and should not be treated as independent evidence of superiority.
