Bayer opened its automated corn-breeding greenhouse in Marana, Arizona, in March 2020. The facility is designed to let researchers grow corn year-round, screen seed genetics earlier and run multiple breeding cycles under controlled conditions. Bayer describes it as a global product design center for corn; the published accounts explain its methods and goals, but do not independently quantify resulting yield gains or environmental benefits.
What the Marana greenhouse is for
Bayer built the facility to support corn hybrid development. In its 2020 annual report, the company said the greenhouse would serve as its global product design center for corn. The goal is to give breeders a controlled place to grow plants throughout the year rather than rely only on seasonal field trials.
Successful Farming reported at the March 2020 opening that Bayer invested approximately $100 million in the facility, which has 300,000 square feet of greenhouse growing space. Bayer later described it as roughly seven acres and said it could support three to four corn crop cycles per year. These figures describe the facility and its stated capability, not an independently measured breeding outcome.
How indoor breeding can shorten the cycle
Outdoor breeding is constrained by growing seasons and weather. Bayer says the Marana greenhouse allows researchers to cultivate plants year-round and customize growing conditions to simulate different environments and weather scenarios. Running more cycles can give breeders opportunities to evaluate generations more frequently, although the cited accounts do not quantify how much time the facility saves compared with field breeding.

Seed chipping and genetic screening
Bayer describes taking a small sample, or “chip,” from a corn seed and analyzing its DNA before growing the plant. Researchers can screen for desired traits earlier in the process, then prioritize promising seed for further testing. The company pairs this method with DNA markers, automation and data science. Tom Jury, Bayer’s field-testing leader, said one DNA chip “can actually be as representative as an early stage field trial.” That is Bayer’s explanation of the method, not an independent validation that a chip replaces field trials.
Automated growing and tracking
A 2022 account by the University of Arizona’s Cooper Center describes pots moving on conveyors, automated planting and tracking, and red LED grow rooms. The visitors reported learning that three harvests per year took place at the facility. That observation is specific to their 2022 tour, rather than a guarantee of current annual output.

What Bayer says the facility is working on now
Bayer’s current Marana location page presents the site as an active innovation center. It describes precision breeding using advanced data analytics, AI and DNA fingerprinting; automated planting and tracking; climate controls and irrigation; and integrated pest management. The page also describes work on short-stature corn, which Bayer says is intended to improve stalk strength and allow denser planting, with potential resilience benefits under some stress conditions. These are company descriptions of research aims and capabilities, not independently verified performance results.
What the published numbers do—and do not—show
Bayer’s current page compares the greenhouse’s 300,000 square feet of growing space with 190 acres of field-corn production. This is Bayer’s comparison of growing-space capacity; it should not be read as a report that the greenhouse produces the same harvested yield as 190 field acres. The Cooper Center’s 2022 tour account separately said three annual harvests would traditionally require 180 acres. The figures come from different descriptions and should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
