The appointments were contingent on Bayer’s proposed Monsanto acquisition closing; they were not effective leadership changes on announcement day.
Who Bayer named in 2018
Bayer said the Executive Leadership Team would have integrated responsibility for the combined activities of Bayer Crop Science and Monsanto after the acquisition closed. The roles and locations below are those in Bayer’s 2018 announcement; they describe the planned organization, not current positions.
| Executive | Planned role | Location stated in announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Liam Condon | Leader of the combined organization; Bayer Board of Management member and Crop Science president | Not stated in the announcement |
| Brett Begemann | Head of Commercial Operations (Chief Operating Officer) | St. Louis |
| Dr. Michael Stern | Head of Digital Farming / Climate Corporation | St. Louis |
| Dr. Robert Reiter | Head of Research & Development | Monheim |
| Frank Terhorst | Head of Crop Strategy & Portfolio Management | St. Louis |
| Dr. Dirk Backhaus | Head of Product Supply | Monheim |
| Jesus Madrazo | Head of Agricultural Affairs & Sustainability | Monheim |
| James Swanson | Crop Science Chief Information Officer and Head of IT / Digital Transformation | Monheim |
| Gabriele Oehlschlaeger | Head of Human Resources | Monheim |
| Michael Schulz | Crop Science CFO and Head of Finance | St. Louis |
| Dr. Lars Benecke | Head of Law, Patents and Compliance | Monheim |
| Martin Dawkins | Head of Post-Merger Integration | Monheim |
Why the appointments were conditional
The Monsanto acquisition still required regulatory approval when Bayer made the announcement. Bayer anticipated closing in the second quarter of 2018 and said the companies would continue operating as competitors under their existing structures until closing. The release therefore announced a selected future team, not an already integrated division.
At the time, Condon was also responsible for Bayer’s Animal Health business unit. Bayer described him as continuing as a member of its Board of Management and Crop Science president while leading the combined organization after closing.
