Are Free Steam Gift Cards Legit? How to Spot a Scam

Steam sells legitimate digital and physical gift cards, but that does not make free-code generators genuine. Learn how to spot risky offers and protect your account and card value.

Real Steam gift cards are legitimate; promises of unlimited or instantly generated free Steam codes are not verified by Steam and should be treated as suspicious. Steam offers digital and physical gift cards, but that does not make a third-party “free code” page genuine. Never share your Steam login, gift-card code, PIN, or payment details to claim a giveaway.

What is legitimate—and what isn’t?

Steam gift cards are real products. Steam says they work like gift certificates that can be redeemed for games, software, hardware, and other items sold on Steam. Digital cards are sent through Steam, and physical cards can be redeemed to a Steam account. See Steam’s gift card information.

That official product does not validate a website, social post, message, or “gift card generator” promising a free code. Steam does not present an unlimited or instantly generated free-code service on its gift-card page. Treat an offer as unverified if it asks for your password, Steam Guard code, a card number or PIN, payment, a survey, or a download. Those are warning signs, not proof that every individual site has been investigated.

Warning signs to check before you click

  • A stranger asks you to pay with a Steam card. Steam warns that someone contacting you to demand Steam Wallet gift cards is most likely targeting you in a scam. Gift cards are not a legitimate way to pay taxes, debts, bail, fees, or an authority or support agent. Steam’s gift card scam guidance explains this warning.
  • A giveaway asks for your credentials or security codes. Don’t enter your Steam password or Steam Guard code on a page reached through an unsolicited message.
  • It asks for the gift-card code, PIN, or a photo of the card. Anyone who obtains the code may be able to use the stored value. The FTC advises consumers not to give a card’s numbers to someone demanding payment. See its gift-card scam guidance.
  • You must pay, complete a survey, or download software to reveal the code. These requirements do not establish that the promised code exists or can be redeemed. Steam’s official product information does not endorse such a process.
  • A stranger offers a Steam code as guaranteed payment in a trade. Steam warns that purported money or gift-card value in a trade can involve fake codes or chargebacks. Don’t treat a stranger’s code as confirmed payment. See Steam’s trading scam guidance.

How to redeem a genuine Steam Wallet code safely

  1. Open Steam using the official app or by entering Steam’s address yourself; don’t use a sign-in link from an unsolicited giveaway message.
  2. Go to Steam’s Wallet Code redemption page and sign in.
  3. Enter the code only on Steam’s page. Steam says the value converts to the currency of your account’s wallet, regardless of where the code was purchased.

If you already shared a code or paid for a card

If someone has your code or card details

  • Keep the physical card and receipt; don’t discard evidence of purchase.
  • Contact Steam Support and report what happened. Steam advises victims to retain the card and receipt and contact local police.
  • If you are in the United States, report the incident to the FTC. Its guidance also recommends contacting the gift-card company promptly and asking whether the money can be recovered.

If you bought a card but have not given or redeemed it

Keep the receipt and ask the retailer to check whether a refund is possible. Steam says an activated but unredeemed card is normally refundable at the retailer, but that is not a guarantee for every retailer or transaction.
