BLIK is a payment system accessed through participating banks’ mobile apps. Depending on your bank and the merchant or ATM, you can use it to pay online or in a store, make supported cash transactions, or send money to a phone number. For many payments, you enter a temporary code and then approve the transaction in your banking app; contactless payments and phone-number transfers work differently.
What BLIK is—and what you need
BLIK is operated by Polski Standard Płatności (PSP). It is not a standalone card or a physical device: you generally need an account at a participating bank and that bank’s mobile app. The app is where you access BLIK and, for code-based payments, approve transactions. Availability and activation steps depend on the bank. BLIK’s guide to using the service lists participating banks and explains that feature availability can differ.
The system covers several distinct uses: online checkout, payments at physical stores, supported ATM transactions, and transfers to a mobile number. Do not assume that every bank, merchant, ATM, or country supports every use.
How to pay with a BLIK code
For a typical online or code-based in-store payment, the code identifies the payment request, but it is not the final approval. You also confirm the transaction in your bank’s app.

- At checkout, choose BLIK as the payment method.
- Open your participating bank’s mobile app and generate a BLIK code.
- Enter the code in the merchant’s checkout or follow the store’s instructions.
- Check the transaction details shown in your banking app, then approve the payment if they match the purchase you initiated.
For an ATM transaction, choose the BLIK option on the machine and follow its instructions; you will approve the transaction in your bank’s app. The precise options depend on the ATM and bank. Some participating banks also support online checkout without entering a code at a remembered store or browser; check your app or bank’s instructions for eligibility. How contactless BLIK works
Contactless BLIK uses NFC rather than the generated-code flow. To set it up, activate the feature in your banking app, enable NFC on your phone, and set a screen lock. At checkout, unlock your phone and tap it on the terminal.

BLIK says its contactless payments work at contactless terminals in Poland and, abroad, at terminals displaying the Mastercard logo. Its guide says this contactless flow does not require mobile-network or internet coverage. That statement applies to contactless payments; it should not be assumed to apply to code payments or other BLIK services. See BLIK’s contactless instructions.
How to send money to a phone number
In your bank’s app, select the transfer-to-mobile option and choose a registered recipient or enter their phone number. This peer-to-peer transfer does not use a generated BLIK code; the EY report describes it as being settled through Express Elixir. Both people need the transfer-to-mobile feature in their banking apps, so availability depends on their banks. Where BLIK is available
BLIK is strongly associated with Polish banking and payments. EY describes its channels as physical stores, the web, ATMs, and person-to-person transfers, and reports that BLIK entered Slovakia in 2024. That historical expansion does not establish that a particular bank, merchant, or transaction type is currently supported there—or elsewhere outside Poland. Check your banking app and the merchant’s checkout before relying on BLIK when travelling.
When comparing BLIK with a card or another mobile payment method, look at the actual payment flow: whether you need an app, a code, NFC, or an internet connection; where the method is accepted; and which features your bank supports. Acceptance and requirements are not universal. BLIK’s guide provides bank-specific starting points for checking availability.

Is BLIK safe?
For a code-based payment, the banking-app confirmation is an important approval step: review the details before authorizing it. But a one-time code does not prevent fraud if someone tricks you into sharing it and approving the resulting transaction. EY warns about scams in which a fraudster persuades a user to provide a BLIK code and confirm a payment. Never approve a request you did not initiate, and do not share a code because someone asks you to do so. EY discusses BLIK-code scams; the operator describes the code and confirmation flow.
How widely is BLIK used?
PSP’s published figures show substantial use, but they describe specific reporting periods rather than a permanent rate of adoption. Its 2025 release reported 2.4 billion BLIK transactions in 2024. Within that year, online stores recorded 1.2 billion payments worth PLN 172.6 billion; POS terminals recorded 576.8 million transactions, including 263.1 million contactless payments; and users made 604.8 million P2P transfers. PSP’s 2024 results release reports those figures.

In a separate release covering January through June 2026—not the full year—PSP reported 1.6 billion transactions worth PLN 244.8 billion, 21.6 million active users at the end of June, 766.7 million online payments, and 393.6 million P2P transactions. These are operator-reported figures for the first half of 2026. PSP’s first-half 2026 release gives the period and totals.
