GM said on October 1 that the launch was on track, but that remains a forward-looking schedule—not confirmation that deliveries have begun. The stakes are high because these full-size pickups are major sellers, and their launch comes as GM adjusts other parts of its business, including electric-vehicle capacity and software services.
What is GM launching, and when will the trucks reach dealers?
The launch covers the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, both designated as 2027 models. In its October 1, 2026 update, GM said the trucks were scheduled to begin arriving at dealerships in Q4 2026 and that the launch was on track. Its July 2026 shareholder letter described the Silverado LD and Sierra LD launch as starting in December, consistent with that broader fourth-quarter window.
These are planned milestones, not guarantees. A dealership-arrival schedule also should not be confused with the start of production at any one plant. GM said in June 2025 that Orion Assembly in Michigan would begin building gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickups in early 2027, a later production milestone for that facility.
Why do Silverado and Sierra matter to GM?
Full-size pickups bring substantial sales volume. Tom Murphy’s January 27, 2026 AOL article, citing GM data, reported 362,909 U.S. deliveries of the Silverado 1500 in 2025, up 1.2% from 2024, and 230,156 Sierra 1500 deliveries, up 7.1%. Those figures are for the light-duty 1500 models, not every truck in either nameplate family.

For a manufacturer, a high-volume launch is a financial and operational test. Reworking a plant for new vehicles can interrupt output, while a delayed or troubled launch can leave dealers waiting for products customers expect. GM has not quantified the financial consequences of this launch in the cited updates, so the sales figures show its scale rather than a forecast of the new trucks’ profitability.
How does the launch fit GM’s financial and EV plans?
The AOL article reported GM’s 2025 earnings before interest and taxes at $12.7 billion and adjusted automotive free cash flow at $10.6 billion. It also reported $7.6 billion in second-half 2025 charges connected to reassessing EV capacity and manufacturing, including $1.8 billion associated with discontinuing BrightDrop production. These are reported 2025 figures, not GM’s 2026 results.

The truck program is part of a broader manufacturing and capacity picture. GM said Orion Assembly would start producing gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickups in early 2027, alongside its plans to bring the next-generation trucks to dealers starting in late 2026. The statements describe different milestones; they do not establish that Orion will build the first vehicles reaching showrooms.
GM has also said it is working to improve EV profitability through battery technology, engineering and operational efficiencies, while acknowledging that consumer adoption is slower than previously anticipated. In the AOL article, CFO Paul Jacobson said the company expected to achieve the scale needed to deliver EVs profitably over time. That outlook helps explain the strategic backdrop, but it does not mean the pickup launch itself resolves GM’s EV losses or capacity decisions.

What role could software revenue play?
The AOL article reported a Super Cruise customer base of 620,000 GM vehicle owners in 2025 and quoted Jacobson as expecting around $400 million in high-margin revenue from expanded OnStar software and services, including Super Cruise. The $400 million is an outlook attributed to Jacobson, not a reported realized result. It signals that GM’s financial plans reach beyond vehicle sales, but the cited reporting does not establish how much of that expected revenue depends on the new Silverado and Sierra.

GM’s October 1 statement is evidence that the company then considered the launch on schedule; it does not confirm final specifications, prices, dealer inventory, or the timing of availability for a particular trim or region. The cited material does not provide enough information to compare towing, payload, powertrains, or transaction prices with existing models. For now, the clearest conclusion is about corporate importance: the trucks’ scale makes a smooth rollout consequential, while the launch schedule remains a plan until vehicles actually arrive.
