The available description of that article confirms its subject, but not the author’s specific items, fees, refund amount, or result. Today’s rules below reflect Temu’s policy, last updated April 28, 2026—not a reconstruction of what happened in 2024. What changed in Temu’s return policy?
The key distinction is between the first return request for an order and a later, separate request for that same order. Under Temu’s U.S. policy, the first return can cover one or multiple eligible items and has free return shipping. A subsequent separate return from the same order incurs a $7.99 shipping deduction plus applicable tax. Temu recommends putting all returnable items in one shipment.
That is more precise than saying that Temu has simply ended free returns. A large batch can still qualify for free return shipping if its eligible items are included in the first return request. The fee applies when additional items from the order are sent back separately. This description is based on the policy Temu lists as updated April 28, 2026; it does not establish every detail of how the rules were worded or applied in June 2024.

What is known about the 2024 first-person test?
David Gewirtz’s ZDNET article, published in June 2024, was a firsthand account prompted by Temu return-policy changes and an attempt to return multiple items. A newsletter summary confirms that framing, but does not provide enough detail to verify the order size, products, location, refund outcome, timing, or whether the author paid a fee. How to return several items from one Temu order
Use the return flow for the order and check that every item you mean to send back appears on the same request before submitting. Temu’s labels and available drop-off methods can vary by order, return method, app version, and country, so follow the instructions shown for your request.
- Open Temu.com or the Temu app and go to Your Orders.
- Choose the relevant order, then select Return/Refund.
- Select all the eligible items you intend to return and choose the reason for each. Provide any details or evidence Temu requests.
- Choose a refund method: Temu credit or the original payment method.
- If Temu requires a physical return, use the label or return code it supplies. Do not send the package to the address on the original delivery label.
- Pack the items listed in that return request together. Include each item’s original barcode; if an item has no barcode, Temu instructs customers to place it in a transparent bag before packing it.
- Drop off the package using the carrier or location listed in Temu’s instructions, such as FedEx, USPS, UPS, or Happy Returns when offered. Keep the receipt and tracking number, then check the order details or Temu notifications for status.
Consolidate items only when they belong to the same return request and Temu’s label or code covers them. Do not combine products from unrelated orders or separate return requests under one label unless Temu expressly instructs you to do so.

Deadlines and items with special rules
Temu says most eligible items can be returned within 90 days of purchase. The return window can differ by product: electronics may have a 45-, 60-, or 90-day window, depending on the seller. After you submit a request, Temu generally requires the package to be postmarked within 14 days. Check the item and return screen rather than assuming every product in the order shares the same deadline.
Temu lists exclusions and special conditions that include:
- Clothing that has been worn or washed, damaged after delivery, or had its tags or hygiene stickers removed.
- Grocery and food products, some health and personal-care items, and some free gifts.
- Some customized products and some underwear orders.
- Items a seller identifies as non-returnable, subject to Temu’s policy.
Because eligibility can differ by item, confirm that each product is returnable before relying on a single deadline for the whole order.

Does every return require sending the item back?
No. Temu says it may issue a refund without requiring an item to be returned, but this is a discretionary option, not a guaranteed way to keep a product. Temu also describes advance refunds after a package is dropped off and instant refunds before the item is returned. Availability may depend on factors including shopping history. If the item is not returned when required or fails inspection, Temu reserves the right to charge the original payment method.
Refund timing, inspections, and possible deductions
When Temu requires a return, it says the refund is generally issued after the package arrives and the items pass quality inspection, unless an advance or instant refund applies. These are separate stages: the return shipment takes time in transit, inspection follows receipt, and a bank or card issuer may take additional time to post a refund.
Temu says a refund to the original payment method usually takes 5–14 business days and may take up to 30 days, depending on the financial institution. Temu credit is faster, does not expire, and generally cannot be converted to cash or reversed after processing. Choose the original payment method if recovering funds outside Temu matters more than speed; choose credit only if its faster availability and use on Temu suit you.

Temu may reduce a refund if an item is used or damaged, parts or accessories are missing, or the item is damaged by improper return packaging, unless the problem was caused by Temu or the seller. For example, Temu’s policy says returned iPhones must be new, unused, and unactivated; include original accessories and packaging; and match the serial number on the original order.
A refund may also exclude the original shipping fee, import tax, insurance costs, or a signature-on-delivery fee when the items were successfully delivered, if the return was not caused by Temu or the seller. The amount returned therefore may not equal the full checkout total.

- Photograph each item and its barcode.
- Photograph the complete contents together and the package before sealing it.
- Save the return label or code, drop-off receipt, and tracking number until the refund is complete.
- Check that the package contains the exact products listed on the request, with required parts and accessories.
Temu warns that if an incorrect item is included, it cannot promise it will be located, returned, or compensated. If a refund is short or an item is marked missing, contact Temu through the order and provide the relevant photos, receipt, tracking details, and return-request information. Keep copies of those records. If the platform does not resolve the issue, consider the options offered by your payment provider; eligibility and deadlines vary, and a payment dispute is not a guaranteed reversal of a valid charge.
Can a large return put your Temu account at risk?
Temu says it may review return behavior as a whole and take action over suspected repeated abnormal or improper returns, empty packages, irrelevant items, or falsified evidence. Possible measures include limiting return options, restricting account functions, or suspending an account. The policy does not say that a legitimate large return is automatically fraud. Accurate item selection, complete packaging, and clear documentation help distinguish a genuine batch return from the conduct Temu identifies as abuse.
Is Temu still practical for shoppers who may return a batch?
The current process can work for a large mixed-item return if the items are eligible and you submit them together under the first return request. It is less convenient if you discover additional items after sending that first package, because a separate return from the same order can trigger the shipping deduction. For inexpensive, lower-risk purchases, that may be an acceptable trade-off. For high-value or time-sensitive purchases—or if you need especially predictable return handling—check the item-specific terms before buying and compare the available alternatives’ current policies. Terms vary by item and seller, so no retailer’s workflow should be assumed to apply uniformly.
