Some media reports described the role as “chief controller,” but that was shorthand rather than an official company title. Jetter did not become Deutsche Börse’s chief executive, join its Executive Board, or take responsibility for day-to-day management.
His appointment followed the company’s 2020 Annual General Meeting. He replaced Joachim Faber and served as chairman until May 14, 2025. Deutsche Börse is now chaired by Clara-Christina Streit.
What “chief controller” meant at Deutsche Börse
In German corporate reporting, the chairman of a company’s Supervisory Board can sometimes be described informally as its “chief controller.” The formal title in this case was Chairman of the Supervisory Board (Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender).
That distinction matters. Deutsche Börse has a two-tier management structure:

Deutsche Börse’s Supervisory Board has 16 members: eight shareholder representatives and eight employee representatives. The chairman leads the board’s work but does not run the exchange operator’s daily business.
When Jetter was nominated and elected
The process took place in two stages, which are sometimes compressed into a single date in short news reports.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 24, 2018 | Jetter joined Deutsche Börse’s Supervisory Board as a member. |
| December 5, 2019 | The Supervisory Board nominated him as the prospective successor to chairman Joachim Faber. |
| May 19, 2020 | After the Annual General Meeting, the Supervisory Board formally elected Jetter chairman. Faber left the board at the end of that meeting. |
| May 14, 2024 | Shareholders re-elected Jetter as a shareholder representative, and the Supervisory Board confirmed him as chairman. |
| May 14, 2025 | Jetter’s board mandate and chairmanship ended at the close of the Annual General Meeting. Clara-Christina Streit became chairwoman. |
Therefore, December 2019 was the date of Jetter’s nomination—not the date on which he formally became chairman. His chairmanship ran from May 19, 2020, through May 14, 2025.

Why Deutsche Börse chose him
Jetter’s experience aligned with several areas becoming increasingly important to a financial-market infrastructure company. Exchanges no longer depend only on trading floors and listings; they also operate large-scale technology, data, clearing, settlement, and risk-management systems.
Contemporary coverage highlighted his international management experience and technology background. Deutsche Börse’s later candidate materials identified his relevant expertise as including:
- Capital markets and the business model of stock exchanges
- Data businesses
- Information technology and security
- Digitalization
- Strategy and sustainability
- Risk management and compliance
- Regulatory requirements
For investors, the appointment was therefore less about installing a new operating executive and more about selecting a Supervisory Board leader with experience in technology-led transformation, international businesses, and complex corporate oversight.

Who was Deutsche Börse’s CEO at the time?
Jetter should not be confused with Theodor Weimer, who was Deutsche Börse’s Executive Board chairman and CEO during this period. Weimer was responsible for the company’s executive management. Jetter chaired the body supervising that management.
Jetter also did not succeed Weimer. He succeeded Joachim Faber as Supervisory Board chairman. Keeping those roles separate avoids three common errors: calling Jetter the CEO, saying he joined the Executive Board, or claiming that he replaced Weimer.
What happened after Jetter’s chairmanship?
On September 10, 2024, Deutsche Börse announced that Jetter would resign his Supervisory Board mandate and chairmanship at the end of the 2025 Annual General Meeting. That change took effect on May 14, 2025.
At the same meeting, shareholders elected Jean-Pierre Mustier as Jetter’s successor on the Supervisory Board. The board then elected Clara-Christina Streit as its new chairwoman.
