Microsoft 365 Premium is Microsoft’s consumer bundle for people who want its productivity apps and the highest listed Copilot limits among its consumer plans. In the United States, Microsoft lists it at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year. The key catch for households: up to six people can share the apps and storage, but the Premium AI benefits belong to the subscription owner.
What is Microsoft 365 Premium?
Microsoft announced Microsoft 365 Premium on October 1, 2025, positioning it as a consumer subscription that combines Microsoft 365 Family benefits with advanced Copilot capabilities. It is a plan for individuals and households—not a business or enterprise license. Microsoft’s announcement describes the bundle; its current consumer plan comparison is the place to check what is available to buy.
The plan includes Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Teams, along with OneDrive storage and benefits involving Microsoft Defender, Designer, and Clipchamp. Copilot is integrated into supported Microsoft 365 apps. Premium’s distinction is its higher consumer AI usage levels and access to selected advanced features, including AI agents that Microsoft says can help create research reports with source citations and analyze data with visualizations.
Those are product capabilities described by Microsoft, not a guarantee that every result will be correct or ready to use without review. Availability can vary by feature, platform, language, and rollout.

U.S. price and plan comparison
Microsoft’s U.S. consumer pricing comparison lists these standard prices and allowances. Prices, taxes, promotions, and availability may differ in other countries or through other billing channels; check the purchase page for the offer shown to your account. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled, and Microsoft’s pricing page may offer a one-month trial subject to its terms.
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | People covered | Storage | AI access |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 | $99.99 | 1 | 1 TB | Copilot features with plan-specific limits; see Microsoft’s comparison and limits page. |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 | $129.99 | Up to 6 | Up to 6 TB total, generally 1 TB per person | AI benefits are available to the subscription owner, not every family member. |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $19.99 | $199.99 | Up to 6 | Up to 6 TB total, generally 1 TB per person | Highest listed limits among these consumer plans and selected Premium AI features; AI benefits are owner-only. |
At the listed U.S. prices, paying annually for Premium works out to about $16.67 per month over a year, about $39.89 less than twelve monthly payments at $19.99. That lower total assumes a full year of use and upfront annual billing; monthly billing costs more over twelve months but avoids committing to the year at once. Microsoft’s pricing page has the plan details and checkout terms.
What Premium adds over Family
Premium is not chiefly a storage upgrade: Family and Premium both cover up to six people and up to 6 TB of shared-plan storage, generally allocated as 1 TB per person. Its extra cost is principally for the owner’s expanded AI access and selected advanced features.

- Higher AI usage levels: Premium has the most extensive listed limits among Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium, though the actual limit depends on the feature.
- Advanced AI features: Microsoft lists agent capabilities for tasks such as producing source-cited research reports and analyzing data with visualizations.
- Copilot in Microsoft apps: Copilot is available in supported Microsoft 365 applications, subject to feature and platform availability. Some Excel Copilot functionality, for example, requires AutoSave and files stored in OneDrive, as noted on Microsoft’s plan comparison.
Microsoft’s plan comparison describes the included features. Feature names, availability, and limits can change.
The household catch: Premium AI is for the owner
Sharing Premium with up to five other people does not give each person a separate Premium Copilot entitlement. Microsoft says the subscription owner receives the AI benefits; other family members can use the shared Microsoft 365 apps and their storage allocations, but do not each get the owner’s Premium AI access. Microsoft explains the distinction in its AI credits and limits guidance.
For example, a household with one person who regularly uses Copilot and several people who mainly need Word, Excel, and OneDrive could find Premium useful. If several household members each want their own advanced AI access, the family-sharing allowance does not meet that need by itself.

Are Copilot features unlimited?
No. Premium means higher consumer-plan limits, not unlimited AI use. Microsoft’s limits documentation says allocations vary by plan and feature; some actions use AI credits, while others have separate frequency limits. Limits may also depend on the feature’s entry point or system conditions, and Microsoft can change them over time. Check that support page for the live limits rather than relying on a fixed prompt, image, or agent-run count.
AI agent features should likewise be treated as bounded tools, not autonomous employees or unrestricted automation. They may have feature-specific limits and requirements, and their availability can vary. Review citations, calculations, and visualizations before relying on them.

Choose Premium if one person will use the AI heavily
Premium is the strongest fit when your work already depends on Microsoft 365 and one subscription owner wants more Copilot capacity or the listed advanced AI features, while other household members mainly need the apps and storage. It is an AI-focused upgrade attached to a shared productivity plan—not six premium AI memberships.
Rank #4
Choose Family if apps and storage matter more than advanced AI
Family is generally the more economical household option when several people need Microsoft apps and storage but AI use is occasional or concentrated in a way that does not justify Premium’s added cost and features. Its shared app and storage allowance is close to Premium’s; the principal trade-off is the lower AI access and lack of Premium’s listed advanced features.
Choose Personal if only one person needs Microsoft 365
Personal costs less than either shared plan and covers one person with 1 TB of storage. It may suit a solo user who wants Microsoft apps and integrated Copilot but does not need Premium’s highest listed consumer limits or its advanced features.
When a separate AI service may be a better fit
Microsoft 365 Premium makes most sense when the value comes from Copilot working alongside Microsoft documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email, and files. A separate general-purpose AI subscription may fit better if you rarely use Microsoft 365, want a chatbot that is not primarily tied to Office workflows, or need individual premium AI access for several people. Compare the current plans and prices directly: the relevant features, billing terms, and availability vary, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all price comparison.

- ChatGPT and its pricing page are options to consider for general-purpose conversation, writing, coding, research, and multimodal use.
- Google Gemini and Google One plans are more relevant if your everyday work is centered on Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive.
Those alternatives are not automatic replacements for Microsoft 365 apps, storage, or household sharing. Consider the workflow and any migration or collaboration costs as well as the AI features.
Do not confuse consumer Premium with Microsoft 365 E7
Microsoft 365 Premium is the consumer plan for individuals and households. Microsoft 365 E7, announced in March 2026 as the “Frontier Suite,” is an enterprise-oriented bundle for organizational AI, security, governance, and agent management. They serve different buyers and are not interchangeable; see Microsoft’s E7 announcement.
Quick Recap
What to check before upgrading
- Confirm that the account receiving Premium is the person who will use its AI features.
- Compare the annual total with monthly billing based on how long you expect to keep the subscription.
- Check Microsoft’s live plan and purchase page for regional price, feature availability, trial terms, and renewal details.
- Review the live AI limits guidance if your decision depends on a particular feature’s usage allowance.
- For an existing Microsoft 365 or Copilot subscriber, use your Microsoft account’s subscription page to check the upgrade or transition options shown to you; do not assume every subscriber has the same migration or refund terms.
