Apple Store pickup was available at many locations on September 20, 2024, but not reliably for every iPhone 16 model or configuration. Availability depended on the store, country, color, storage capacity, and time of day. This is a historical account of launch day—not a report of current iPhone 16 inventory.
What was available on launch day?
Apple opened sales of the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max on September 20, 2024. Pre-orders had begun September 13. Apple confirmed that customers could buy the lineup in Apple Stores, on Apple.com, and in the Apple Store app. Apple’s launch-day announcement and its iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus announcement establish those dates.
“Available” did not mean every combination was waiting at every store. Pickup depended on the exact model, color, storage capacity, purchase or carrier-activation option, location, and time. The standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus were distinct from the Pro and Pro Max, and stock for one configuration did not guarantee stock for another.
Where was pickup reported?
A September 20, 2024 report found same-day or next-day pickup at Apple Stores in a number of markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates. The report said several European markets showed availability across colors and configurations. At the time it was published, pickup displays for the United States and Canada had not updated consistently. These were launch-day snapshots, not a guarantee for every store or buyer. MacRumors’ report describes the observed availability.

How to reserve Apple Store pickup
To check a particular configuration, use Apple.com or the Apple Store app and follow checkout through to a confirmed pickup option. Labels and available time windows can vary by region and interface.
- Open Apple.com or the Apple Store app and choose the iPhone 16 model you want.
- Select the color and storage capacity, then choose an unlocked or carrier option if offered.
- Add the phone to your bag and begin checkout.
- Choose “I’ll pick it up” or the equivalent in-store pickup option.
- Enter your ZIP code or postal code, then select a store showing availability.
- Choose an available pickup date and, if offered, a check-in window; complete payment or financing arrangements.
- Wait for Apple’s pickup-ready email or mobile notification with the pickup information before traveling.
Apple says some products and payment methods are not eligible for pickup, and it instructs customers to wait for the pickup notification and arrive in the selected window. See Apple’s pickup and delivery guidance. The 15-minute check-in window mentioned in launch-day reporting was specific to that report; it should not be treated as a universal current rule.

What to bring to collect the order
- Your order number.
- A valid government-issued photo ID.
- The QR code or Wallet pass from Apple’s pickup notification. Apple does not accept a screenshot or photograph of the code or pass; open the original notification or Wallet pass.
Apple’s pickup guidance lists these requirements. A designated pickup contact may be allowed if added during checkout, but eligibility can depend on the product and payment method. Apple’s iPhone shopping help also notes that additional identification or payment information may be requested in some circumstances, such as when billing and identification details do not match. Check the order instructions rather than assuming another person can collect it.
Should you walk in without a reservation?
A walk-in purchase could work if the store had stock, but it was not guaranteed. Launch-day reporting said walk-in customers might face a separate queue and could have lower priority than customers collecting pickup orders. A store’s online pickup listing and its walk-in shelf stock were not interchangeable guarantees: a pickup slot could be unavailable even if stock existed, or a configuration could sell out before a walk-in customer reached the counter. The launch-day report described these risks.

- Reserve the exact configuration online when a pickup slot is available.
- Do not make the trip based only on a checkout page or an assumption about stock; wait for Apple’s ready notification.
- If no slot appears, check other nearby stores and configurations before relying on a walk-in.
Apple’s U.S. retail policy says an uncollected pickup order may be canceled. Read the applicable Apple retail sales policies and follow the deadline in the order notification.
If your preferred Pro or Pro Max configuration is unavailable
Use the inventory search as a way to compare trade-offs, not just to refresh the same store repeatedly. Try nearby Apple Stores, another color, or a different storage tier; compare the Pro with Pro Max; and check delivery estimates before giving up on the preferred configuration. A standard iPhone 16 or 16 Plus may be a practical substitute if immediate replacement matters more than Pro features.

Some launch-day forum posts described Pro models available where Pro Max models were not, but those are individual store anecdotes, not representative inventory data. The discussion illustrates why checking the exact configuration matters; it does not establish a general stock pattern.
You can also check a carrier store or authorized retailer. Compare the actual transaction terms: a carrier offer may depend on a specific plan, trade-in condition, installment period, activation, or continued service. A monthly bill credit is not the same as an immediate discount. Apple’s carrier-offers page can show available terms, which vary over time and by eligibility. Do not assume a launch-era promotion remains active.

Pickup, walk-in, or delivery: the practical trade-off

If cost matters as much as speed, compare the full terms before choosing where to buy. Apple lists trade-in and purchase options at its iPhone 16 buying page and explains trade-in conditions at Apple Trade In. A trade-in estimate can change after inspection based on the device’s model and condition. For a carrier offer, weigh the required plan and installment term against the benefit rather than comparing only the advertised credit.
What the launch-day headline means now
“Today” in the original availability story meant September 20, 2024. The information above describes what was reported at launch and cannot establish what is in stock in October 2026. For a present-day purchase, check the exact model and ZIP or postal code on Apple’s iPhone 16 buying page or in the Apple Store app; do not infer current inventory from launch-day availability.
