Asian stocks were mostly lower on October 7, 2026, according to day-of reporting. Official index-provider data show Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed down 0.92% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.62%. Shanghai markets were reported closed for a national holiday, so no daily move should be inferred for them.
How major Asian markets performed on October 7
The figures below distinguish official index-provider readings from rounded figures reported by news sources. They are not a harmonized closing table: observations and reporting precision differ.
| Market or benchmark | Reported level or move | Source and qualification |

| Singapore — Straits Times Index | Down more than 1.6% | Akashvani News; rounded secondary-report figure. |
| Mainland China — Shanghai markets | Closed | Associated Press reporting syndicated by Yahoo Finance said markets were closed for a national holiday; a daily change is not applicable from this report. |
What “mostly lower” means—and what it does not
The Associated Press, syndicated by Yahoo Finance, described Asian shares as mostly retreating after U.S. stocks reached records. Akashvani News separately reported declines in South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan. These accounts support a broad description of a weaker regional session, not a precise ranking of every Asian market: their figures are rounded, and they do not establish a shared official close time or calculation method.
The Nikkei and Hang Seng readings are the clearest precise comparisons in this snapshot because they come from their respective index providers. Even those two benchmarks cover different markets and are observed at different stated times.

How to compare the Nikkei and Hang Seng
They measure different markets
The Nikkei 225 tracks 225 stocks in the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. Nikkei Indexes describes it as a price-weighted equity index, meaning constituent share prices—not simply each company’s total market value—determine the weighting. See Nikkei Indexes’ Nikkei 225 profile.
The Hang Seng Index is a Hong Kong market indicator. Its provider says it was publicly launched on November 24, 1969, and describes it as a widely quoted measure of Hong Kong stock-market performance. See Hang Seng Indexes’ index details.

Check construction, currency and observation time
A one-day percentage change can help describe a benchmark’s session, but it is not enough to make the indexes interchangeable. For a meaningful comparison, check each index’s market coverage, weighting method, sector mix, currency and exact observation time. In particular, the Nikkei’s price-weighting means its move should not be treated as equivalent to that of a market-cap-weighted index.

It records declines in the cited official closes for Japan and Hong Kong and a mostly weaker regional direction in contemporaneous reporting. It does not establish why each index moved. The AP-syndicated report placed the declines in the context of a Wall Street rally associated with earnings, but that context does not prove a cause for any individual Asian market’s move.
