A verified net-worth figure for Arnold Palmer is not established by the available sources. Forbes estimated his career earnings at $875 million in 2016, or $1.3 billion adjusted for inflation—but career earnings are not the value of his assets minus liabilities.

Was Arnold Palmer’s net worth publicly established?

The sources available do not establish an independently verified estimate of Palmer’s wealth when he died, the total value of his estate, or its current value. A net-worth figure would require valuing assets and subtracting liabilities at a specific point in time. The reported numbers below measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What do the reported figures measure?

Figure What it measures Source and date
$875 million Estimated career earnings, including appearances, endorsements, licensing and golf-course-design fees as well as prize money—not net worth. Forbes, 2016. Forbes
$1.3 billion The same estimated career-earnings total adjusted for inflation—not a separate valuation of Palmer’s wealth. Forbes, 2016. Forbes
More than $175 million An older estimate of Palmer’s personal fortune, not a current or independently verified estate valuation. Forbes estimate from 1994, reported by The Washington Post in 2016. The Washington Post
$40 million Estimated earnings generated by Palmer’s estate during the 12 months covered by Forbes’s 2017 report—not the estate’s total value or a current annual income figure. Forbes, 2017. Forbes
$3.6 million Prize money over 52 years on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, as estimated by Forbes. This has a different stated scope from the TOUR’s official-money record. Forbes, 2016. Forbes
$1,861,857 Official money recorded in Palmer’s PGA TOUR career profile; it is not a net-worth figure or a replacement for Forbes’s differently scoped prize-money estimate. PGA TOUR career profile, accessed 2026. PGA TOUR
$36 million Yearly earnings reported for Palmer in 2012; yearly income, not net worth. Golf Digest figure summarized by the USGA in 2016. USGA

How did Palmer earn beyond tournament golf?

Forbes’s 2016 account attributed much of Palmer’s earnings to work outside prize money: appearances, endorsements, licensing and golf-course design. It also described business interests and activities including Bay Hill, which he owned for more than 40 years, co-founding the Golf Channel, and licensing his name to AriZona Beverage Co. The scale of those commercial activities helps explain why a career-earnings estimate could greatly exceed tournament winnings, but it does not reveal how much wealth he retained after expenses, taxes, liabilities or other financial arrangements.

His brand continued to generate income after his death. Forbes’s 2017 estimate of $40 million in estate earnings covered the 12 months in its report and discussed licensing agreements, apparel stores in Asia and ongoing brand partnerships. Palmer’s longtime IMG agent Alastair Johnston told Forbes: “The licensing business is one by its nature that can perpetuate far beyond the person’s demise if set up correctly.” The figure describes income during a period, not the estate’s assets minus its debts.

How to interpret “how much was Arnold Palmer worth?”

If “worth” means lifetime earnings, the clearest widely reported figure here is Forbes’s 2016 estimate of $875 million, with its $1.3 billion inflation-adjusted equivalent. If it means his wealth at death or the value of his estate today, the cited figures do not answer that question. The official Arnold Palmer website lists organizations and businesses associated with his legacy—including Arnold Palmer Enterprises, Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Latrobe Country Club, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation—but does not provide a consolidated wealth figure: ArnoldPalmer.com.
