HB4 wheat is not commercially available to U.S. farmers. Bioceres CEO Federico Trucco said in September 2024 that marketing would take at least two years, but that estimate was overtaken by a more cautious timeline: on April 14, 2026, Reuters reported that U.S. field trials were still at least two years away and that Colorado Wheat Research Foundation CEO Brad Erker put commercial seed sales no earlier than 2030 or 2032, depending on buyer acceptance. Those are forecasts, not fixed launch dates.
What the two-year estimate meant
After the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2024 regulatory determination, Trucco told Reuters on September 10 that Bioceres needed at least two years before it could market HB4 wheat to U.S. buyers. He identified two prerequisites: introducing the trait into wheat genetics suited to U.S. growing regions and winning acceptance from countries that import U.S. wheat.
The estimate did not signal that seed was ready for sale or that commercial planting could begin two years after the announcement. It was an early forecast for marketing, conditional on development work and export-market requirements. Reuters reported that Bioceres and CWRF were working on seven wheat types focused on hard red winter and spring wheat. That was a 2024 status report, not confirmation that those varieties were ready for commercial release.
Regulatory status is not the same as commercial readiness
| Milestone | Who and when | What it established | What remained |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food-safety consultation | FDA; completed June 22, 2022, for human food. FDA’s animal-food memo is dated June 7, 2022. | FDA’s voluntary consultation record for HB4 wheat event IND-ØØ412-7 says the agency had no further questions about the submitted safety information. | This was not authorization to plant or sell the wheat commercially. |
| Plant-regulatory determination | USDA APHIS; August 2024 | APHIS determined HB4 wheat did not pose an increased plant-pest risk relative to comparator wheat and was not subject to regulation under 7 CFR part 340. | Breeding into U.S.-adapted wheat, trials, stewardship, seed-channel planning and export-market acceptance still had to be addressed. |
| Commercial launch readiness | Bioceres, CWRF, breeding partners and wheat-market stakeholders; work continued after the 2024 decision | Later reporting described researchers testing whether the trait would work in U.S. Plains wheat genetics. | Field trials and buyer acceptance remained dependencies; CWRF’s April 2026 estimate put sales no earlier than 2030 or 2032. |
The FDA record is a food-safety consultation, while the USDA decision concerns plant-pest regulation. Neither, alone or together, means that commercial U.S. seed sales have begun. U.S. Wheat Associates said after the USDA decision that closed-system field trials and other commercialization steps remained.

Why the timeline moved further out
HB4 has to work in U.S. wheat genetics
A trait developed or assessed in other wheat backgrounds cannot simply be assumed to perform the same way in U.S.-adapted varieties. Reuters reported on April 14, 2026, that public-university researchers were testing whether HB4 would function in U.S. Plains wheat genetics and that no HB4 wheat had been planted in U.S. fields as of that report. CWRF’s Erker said field trials were still at least two years away.
Stewardship and seed systems have to be put in place
U.S. wheat organizations have emphasized that regulatory status is only one part of commercialization. The principles described by Bioceres in 2025 include communication with U.S. Wheat Associates and the National Association of Wheat Growers, education and outreach, trait-detection tests, a certified-seed value-capture model, and plans for food and feed approvals and low-level-presence thresholds in major export markets. These are practical conditions for managing the crop and its supply chain, not administrative details that the USDA determination automatically completed.

- Cover Crop - Large premium packet of Annual Buckwheat seeds. Winter-hardy and drought-tolerant cover crops can help cover the soil of your home garden beds during the off season. We've included enough seed in one packet to cover an 8' x 4' garden bed. Minimum of 14 g per packet (about 465 seeds).
- Productive - Buckwheat germinates in 7-14 days when soil temps are 70-80°F. Plant .5” deep and space 4-6” apart in an area with full sun. This variety will grow 2-3’ tall with a spread of 6-18”. Buckwheat will mature in 70-90 days, plant in USDA zones 3-10.
- Soil Health - Buckwheat grows quickly to smother weeds and protect from erosion. If allowed to mature, groats are protein-rich and provide a nutritious alternative to wheat for anyone who needs to avoid gluten. Beekeepers love its nutritional benefits for honeybees. Improving soil health through cover crop planting is an easy and low cost way of maintaining your garden from year to year.
- Easy to Grow - Instructions included on each packet. Plus, we are available to answer all your questions. If these seeds don’t germinate, we will happily make it right for you.
- Safe and Sustainable - Our operation is fully solar powered, and Sow Right Seeds has taken the Safe Seed Pledge to sell only fresh Non-GMO heirloom seeds for you and your family.
Buyers abroad can affect whether U.S. sales make sense
U.S. wheat is exported, so market acceptance matters beyond the United States. If major customers will not accept a trait, growers, handlers and exporters may face extra segregation and market-access risks. In September 2024, Reuters named Mexico, the Philippines and Japan as major importers that had not approved HB4 at that time; that is a historical status statement, not a current list of approvals. In April 2026, Erker said the timing of sales depended on acceptance by major buyers, including Japan and Mexico.
What changed in Bioceres’ route to market
Bioceres’ fiscal 2025 SEC filing says the company stopped commercializing HB4 wheat and soybean seeds through its own branded channel and shifted toward licensing the trait. The filing describes a September 2025 agreement under which CWRF received exclusive U.S. rights to manage access to HB4 wheat, sublicense it to third-party breeding programs and commercial channels, and coordinate stakeholder engagement. CWRF is therefore an access and licensing coordinator, not a seed retailer offering HB4 wheat for purchase.

In March 2025, Bioceres announced a USPTO Notice of Allowance for its first event-specific U.S. HB4 wheat patent and said the protection would extend through 2042. A notice of allowance is a patent milestone, not evidence that seed is trial-ready, approved for planting, or commercially available. Bioceres described a broad licensing approach for the eventual rollout.
How to read HB4’s yield claim
Bioceres reported an average 20% yield increase for HB4 in water-limited conditions in 2022. Treat that as a company-reported figure, not an independently established U.S. commercial result. The U.S. genetics and field-testing work described in 2026 had not yet reached field trials, so the reported figure should not be read as a forecast of what U.S. farmers will gain.
