Some advance bookings show a notable, time-specific decline—but the available figures do not prove that European airlines broadly face weak demand on US routes. Cirium data reported by Travel Weekly showed Europe-to-US bookings for July 2026 down 15.3% year over year as of March 14. That was a snapshot of bookings in selected third-party sales channels, not a count of passengers who ultimately flew.
What the booking figure actually measures
The 15.3% decline compares bookings made for Europe-to-US travel in July 2026 through March 14 with bookings made by the equivalent point a year earlier. Cirium’s analysis, as described by Travel Weekly, drew primarily on online travel agencies and global distribution systems and excluded bookings made directly with airlines. It is therefore evidence of softer forward bookings in the channels observed—not a complete tally of all reservations or completed journeys.
The same report put US-to-Europe bookings down 11.2%. That is a separate direction of travel; it should not be combined with the Europe-to-US figure or described as one overall transatlantic decline. Bookings can also change as the travel date approaches: later reservations, cancellations, direct sales and shifts between sales channels affect the eventual passenger count.
What other indicators say—and what they cannot settle
European carriers’ wider passenger demand
The International Air Transport Association reported that European carriers’ passenger demand rose 1.5% year over year in June 2026. Capacity grew 2.0%, and the load factor—the share of available seats filled—was 87.1%, down 0.5 percentage points. These figures cover carriers’ overall markets, not Europe–US routes specifically, so they neither confirm nor disprove a slowdown on US-bound flights. IATA’s June 2026 data provides regional context, not a transatlantic route count.

Capacity and fares on two major routes
OAG reported lower capacity in Q2 2026 on London–New York and Paris–New York, alongside fares up 5–8% in both directions across those routes. This describes two city pairs, not the full Europe–US market, and does not itself measure bookings or passenger totals. Lower capacity and higher fares can be consistent with a tighter market, but they are not interchangeable with a direct measure of demand. OAG’s route analysis is best read as specific capacity and pricing context.
Airport and network totals
ACI EUROPE reported that passenger traffic across its EU+ airport market increased overall in the first half of 2026, with substantial variation among countries. Among large markets, Italy was up 4.2%, Spain 3.7%, France 0.6% and the UK 0.4%, while Germany was down 1.2%. Airport totals include travel to, from and within Europe; they cannot isolate US-bound passengers. ACI EUROPE’s first-half figures are therefore broader context rather than a test of transatlantic demand.

Similarly, EUROCONTROL said the European network averaged 36,201 daily flights in Week 29 (July 13–19, 2026), 1.9% above 2025. That measure covers overall network activity, not Europe–US bookings or passengers. EUROCONTROL’s Week 29 overview cannot establish whether demand for US flights was high or low.
How to read the evidence
- Bookings are not flown passengers: the July result is an advance-booking snapshot, and the covered channels exclude direct airline sales.
- Direction and timing matter: Europe-to-US and US-to-Europe bookings are separate measures, and the cited booking figure applies to July travel observed as of March 14, 2026.
- Demand is not capacity: the IATA figures describe regional carrier demand and capacity; OAG’s figures describe capacity and fares on selected routes.
- Aggregates conceal differences: a regional carrier, airport or network total cannot show how every airline, route, cabin or travel month performed.
So, are European airlines seeing low demand for US flights?
The strongest supported conclusion is narrower than a blanket “yes”: a third-party booking snapshot showed a substantial year-over-year drop for Europe-to-US travel in July 2026, while broader indicators were mixed and did not isolate US routes. The available figures establish a notable weakness in one advance-booking measure, not a universal downturn in realized demand across European airlines.
