Christian alleges Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), the company behind 2Day FM, directed him to make the 2012 royal prank call, later failed to provide promised support, and made his February 2025 redundancy non-genuine. Those claims, reported from court documents, are allegations—not findings by a court.
What Christian alleges in the lawsuit
Australian Associated Press reported on 7 July 2025 that Christian had sued SCA in the Federal Court. According to AAP’s account of court documents, Christian alleges that the production team ordered him to make the call and that SCA later failed to provide health, public-relations and career support it had promised.
He also alleges that his February 2025 redundancy was not genuine because SCA still needed his former role. The reporting does not establish that a court has accepted any of these claims. Christian is seeking penalties, compensation for economic loss and damages, according to AAP’s report carried by The Guardian.
What happened during the 2012 call
On 4 December 2012, 2Day FM presenters Michael Christian and Mel Greig called King Edward VII’s Hospital in London, impersonating members of the British royal family. Catherine, then the Duchess of Cambridge, was being treated there during her pregnancy. Nurse Jacintha Saldanha answered and transferred the call to a colleague, who disclosed information about Catherine’s condition, according to contemporaneous reporting by the ABC.

Saldanha died days later. The ABC’s report at the time described her death as an “apparent suicide” and said police had not yet determined the circumstances. Later accounts describe her death as suicide. That sequence alone does not establish a simple, proven causal link between the broadcast and her death, or determine who was legally responsible for the later harm.
King Edward VII’s Hospital chairman Lord Simon Glenarthur condemned the call in a statement quoted by the ABC on 10 December 2012: “King Edward VII’s Hospital cares for sick people, and it was extremely foolish of your presenters even to consider trying to lie their way through to one of our patients, let alone actually make the call,” the ABC reported.

What is established about the broadcast decision
Christian’s allegation that the production team ordered him to make the call is distinct from what was publicly said about the decision to broadcast it. In 2013, SCA said Greig was not responsible for that decision, that she had suggested edits, and that 2Day FM chose to air the call without alteration. The ABC quoted the company’s statement: “Mel Greig wishes to make it clear that, as an announcer, she was not responsible for the decision to broadcast the hoax call,” the broadcaster reported.
The ABC also reported that Greig’s separate workplace dispute was resolved and that she resigned. That was a different matter from Christian’s 2025 lawsuit.

Why the lawsuit is not a case about Saldanha’s death
The claims described in the July 2025 reporting focus on Christian’s alleged work instructions, the support he says SCA promised, and his redundancy. They do not establish a new lawsuit seeking a finding about Saldanha’s death. Keeping those issues separate matters: the known broadcast sequence, Christian’s account of what he was told, and any legal responsibility for subsequent harm are not interchangeable conclusions.
Former SCA chief executive Rhys Holleran, who led the company at the time, told the ABC in 2024: “I have always felt completely and utterly responsible for this,” according to AAP’s account of that interview. His statement expresses his own sense of responsibility; it is not a court finding on Christian’s allegations or a legal determination of causation.

Has the Federal Court decided the case?
No outcome is established in the reports available here. AAP said on 7 July 2025 that the matter had yet to appear before the Federal Court. The reporting does not establish any later procedural event, decision or settlement, so the allegations should not be presented as proven or the case described as won, lost or settled.
