But the headline claim that it still holds half a trillion dollars’ worth is not a verified estimate of mineable gold. A 2023 study estimated 48,072 tonnes remaining in its accounting model, while warning that nearly all of it is inaccessible with current mining methods and is not a code-compliant resource or reserve.
What is the Witwatersrand Basin?
The Witwatersrand Basin is a vast sedimentary geological formation in South Africa. Its gold occurs in quartz-pebble conglomerate reefs within the Witwatersrand Supergroup—not in a single solid mass of gold. Government reference material describes the gravels as having been transported into the basin and reworked about 2.75 billion years ago; the Minerals Council describes the sedimentary sequence as ending about 2,700 million years ago, before widespread faulting and lava flows covered it. The commonly used age of roughly 2.7 billion years refers to this ancient geological history, not to one isolated object with a single birthday. (South African Government, 2012; Minerals Council South Africa)
The goldfields were discovered near Johannesburg in 1886. The South African government reference describes a crescent-like goldfield extending roughly 350 kilometres. (South African Government, 2012)
How much gold has the basin produced?
Published totals differ, so the figures need to be read with their sources and definitions attached. The South African Government Communication and Information System’s 2012 yearbook reported more than 50,055 tonnes produced from the basin’s seven major goldfields. The Minerals Council South Africa currently describes the basin as having produced more than two billion ounces and estimates that it supplied about 40% of the world’s mined gold. These are attributed estimates, not a single universally agreed tally: other sources use different totals or denominators. (South African Government, 2012; Minerals Council South Africa)

- COMPLETE GOLD PANNING KIT FOR ADULTS & BEGINNERS: Scoop paydirt with the 12" scoop, screen it through the 6" mini gold classifier, run it through the pocket sluice box, then finish in two patented spiral riffle gold pans. Everything for a first day on the creek, packed in one drawstring backpack.
- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- 35 LB RARE EARTH MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The HUNTLEY sweeper wand's 35 lb rare earth magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
For comparison, a 2023 paper by Handley estimated 50,222 tonnes extracted through 2019, with a stated uncertainty of 1,182 tonnes. That is the paper’s historical accounting estimate, not a replacement for every other published production total. (Handley, 2023)
How much gold is estimated to remain?
Handley’s 2023 study estimated 48,072 tonnes remaining in the basin, with an uncertainty of 8,964 tonnes. The estimate is based on data through 2019 and is an accounting model, not an operating mine’s reserve statement. The paper also notes limitations in historical data and unquantified losses. That distinction matters because “gold remaining” can describe several different things: metal estimated to exist in the ground, material classified as a mineral resource, or a reserve judged economically extractable under specified technical and economic conditions. A basin-wide accounting estimate should not be treated as equivalent to a code-compliant resource or reserve. The World Gold Council explains that reserves have higher geological confidence and an economic assessment, while broader resources can have less geological certainty and may not have been economically modelled. (World Gold Council)
Is the remaining gold mineable?
Not on the basis of the 48,072-tonne estimate. Handley says nearly all of the estimated remainder will remain inaccessible with current mining methods; major technical advances would be needed before it could qualify as a resource or reserve under the cited SAMREC Code. The study’s number therefore describes an estimated residual endowment, not a quantity that mining companies can presently extract or sell. (Handley, 2023)

Even a geological estimate is not a measure of economic value. Recoverability depends on where the gold occurs, whether it can be accessed and processed, and whether extraction is technically and economically viable. The basin-wide figure cannot by itself establish how much gold is available to a mine, much less what could be profitably recovered.
Does the basin really have half a trillion dollars of gold left?
No current basin-specific valuation in the cited sources verifies that claim. A dollar figure would require, at minimum, a dated gold price and a clear assumption about how much of the estimated metal is recoverable. The 48,072-tonne model estimate does not provide that basis: nearly all of the estimated remainder is described as inaccessible with current methods, and it is not a reserve declaration. A gross calculation that multiplies estimated in-ground metal by a gold price would not mean that amount of money could be realized through mining.

The World Gold Council says its global gold-accounting dollar values use the LBMA Gold Price PM at period end. That convention for global accounting does not substantiate a half-trillion-dollar valuation for the Witwatersrand Basin. (World Gold Council)

A separate 2023 Scientific Reports study proposed that up to 420 tonnes of gold may be associated with overlooked auriferous sulphides in Witwatersrand mine tailings. The authors describe this as an underexploited research opportunity: conventional processing can leave some gold associated with sulphides in discarded material. The figure is a research estimate, not evidence that all of it is commercially recoverable or an addition to a proven reserve. (Scientific Reports, 2023)

Why do published estimates of the basin’s share differ?
The share depends on which production estimate and global total a source compares. The government yearbook uses the phrase “nearly half”; the Minerals Council estimates about 40% of the world’s mined gold; and the 2023 tailings paper describes historical production as approximately 28% of all gold ever mined. Those percentages are not interchangeable: sources may use different production totals, time frames, or denominators. For the 40% figure, the appropriate attribution is the Minerals Council’s estimate, not a claim that all sources agree.
