That makes the claim that Apple’s Store no longer requires verification outdated for U.S. shoppers.
Does Apple still verify student discounts?
Apple’s U.S. Shopping Help page says, “Verification is required to check out” when using education pricing. Apple identifies UNiDAYS as the verification service, with verification available online or in an Apple Store. Apple’s U.S. Education Store help page also says that signing in with an Apple Account first keeps you verified for an entire year.
This describes Apple’s current U.S. instructions; checkout rules can vary by country or region. Apple says shoppers must order through the Education Store for their own country or region to receive its special pricing.
How the verification policy changed
A May 8, 2026 report by 9to5Mac said Apple began requiring verification for U.S. Education Store purchases that day, replacing what the report described as an honor system. Apple’s current U.S. help page confirms that verification is now required. The report also said the change applied in Australia, Hong Kong, Turkey, Canada, and Chile; that country list is reported by 9to5Mac, not confirmed here by current Apple terms for each market. Who qualifies for Apple education pricing?
Apple’s U.S. help page lists current and newly accepted college students, their parents, faculty, staff, and homeschool teachers of all grade levels as eligible. Apple’s detailed U.S. terms spell out additional qualifying K–12 roles and clarify how parents may buy for students:
- Higher education: Faculty and staff, students who are attending or have been accepted, and parents buying on behalf of a qualifying student.
- K–12 education: Employees of public or private K–12 institutions in the United States or Puerto Rico, homeschool teachers, currently serving school-board members, and currently serving PTA/PTO executives.
Apple’s detailed eligibility rules are in its U.S. Education Store terms. Eligibility alone does not bypass checkout verification.

Which purchases qualify—and what are the restrictions?
Apple says Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch may be eligible for education pricing; it does not say every product or model receives a discount. The U.S. terms also state that education-priced purchases are not for institutional purchase or resale, and that annual quantity limits apply to some product categories. Check Apple’s live terms for the applicable limits before ordering, since the listed terms can change.
