That makes the 2025 reports of Visa and American Express pursuing the network role a story about negotiations that preceded a different official outcome—not an unresolved contest. Apple said the issuer transition was expected to take approximately 24 months from January 7, 2026; it did not give a fixed completion date.
What Apple announced—and what it did not
On January 7, 2026, Apple announced that Chase would become the issuer of Apple Card and that Mastercard would continue as the card’s payment network. The announcement establishes the planned partnership, not a completed issuer handover. Apple and Goldman Sachs described the transition as expected to take approximately 24 months from the announcement. Apple’s announcement and Goldman Sachs’s announcement are the primary sources for those details.

The available announcements do not confirm that Apple accepted Visa’s reported offer or that American Express reached an agreement. They name Chase and Mastercard as the planned partners.
What Visa, Amex and Mastercard were reportedly seeking

| Company | Reported role sought | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | Payment network | The Wall Street Journal reported an offer to Apple of roughly $100 million as an inducement. This was a reported proposal, not a confirmed payment or accepted deal. |
| American Express | Both issuer and payment network | The Wall Street Journal reported that Amex pitched to take both roles. The available official announcements do not confirm an agreement. |
| Mastercard | Retain its payment-network role | The Wall Street Journal reported Mastercard was seeking to keep the role. Apple later announced Mastercard would remain the network. |
The Wall Street Journal account was reproduced in secondary coverage; Apple’s and Goldman Sachs’s later announcements confirm the Chase transition and Mastercard continuity, but not the details of private negotiations. The reported $100 million figure should therefore be understood as a figure attributed to the 2025 report, not as an official Apple or Visa disclosure. The Wall Street Journal report
Issuer and payment network do different jobs
The issuer provides and administers the credit account. The payment network routes transactions between the card, merchants and financial institutions and supports acceptance. Apple’s announcement separates those roles: Chase is to take the issuer role, while Mastercard is to remain the network. The reported Amex pitch was notable because it sought both roles; Visa’s reported bid concerned the network role.

That distinction is why the announced issuer change does not mean Apple Card is switching from Mastercard to Visa or Amex. Under the announced arrangement, Mastercard remains the network.

Goldman Sachs remains involved during the transition
Apple’s transition FAQ says Goldman Sachs will continue servicing Apple Card users until the transition to Chase is complete. The process is subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals, so the approximately 24-month estimate is not a guaranteed completion date. Apple’s Apple Card transition FAQ

No immediate action was required under Apple’s stated guidance
Apple’s FAQ said users did not need to take action at that time and that it would share additional details as the transition date approached. Because that guidance may change as the handover progresses, check Apple’s FAQ for the latest instructions rather than relying on the initial announcement.
Mastercard continuity is the announced plan
Apple says Mastercard will remain the payment network, preserving Mastercard acceptance and benefits under the announced arrangement. This is a statement of the planned network relationship; it does not provide a new transition date or additional terms for cardholders.
