Amazon Is Breaking Its Delivery Speed Records—but Do You Need Same-Day Shipping?

Amazon’s delivery records show growing use of same- and next-day shipping, not that every order needs to be rushed. Here’s when speed helps and when a later delivery may make more sense.

Amazon says it delivered more than 13 billion items worldwide the same or next day in 2025, including more than 8 billion in the U.S. That is a record number of items, not evidence that every package arrived faster or that every customer needed it urgently. Fast delivery can be valuable when you need an essential now or have few nearby shopping options. For a routine purchase, the earliest date may bring little personal benefit—and choosing a later or combined delivery, when offered, can help consolidate shipments.

What Amazon’s delivery record measures

In its February 2026 announcement, Amazon reported that Prime delivered more than 13 billion items the same or next day worldwide in 2025, including more than 8 billion in the U.S. The U.S. total was up more than 30% from 2024. Amazon called it the fastest Prime delivery speed yet for the third consecutive year. These are company-reported item counts and categories; they are not an independently audited count, a count of orders, or a breakdown of how many hours each parcel took to arrive. Amazon’s 2026 announcement also says half of U.S. same- or next-day items were groceries and everyday essentials.

The scale has grown over time: Amazon said it delivered over 9 billion items worldwide the same or next day in 2024 and over 7 billion in 2023. Those totals show rising volume, but they do not tell you whether any particular purchase needed expedited delivery.

When same- or next-day delivery is useful

  • You need an essential promptly. A household that has run out of a necessary staple may get real value from a shorter wait.
  • The item is time-sensitive. Amazon describes same-day pharmacy operations and perishable grocery delivery in its overview of its delivery network. Whether a service or delivery window is available depends on the customer’s location and order.
  • Local access is limited. Amazon said in June 2025 that it planned to expand same- and next-day delivery to tens of millions of customers in more than 4,000 smaller U.S. cities, towns, and rural communities by year-end. It argued that residents far from stores may have fewer local choices. That was an announced plan and rationale, not confirmation that delivery was completed in every area named.

For customers who would otherwise spend substantial time reaching a store, delivery can be a practical access benefit. Amazon estimated that U.S. Prime members saved an average of $550 on fast, free delivery in 2025, and avoided an average of 64 store trips and more than 55 hours. Those are Amazon’s estimates, not independent measurements. Its time calculation assumes that each day a member places at least one qualifying order saves an average of 51 minutes compared with a physical-store trip, drawing on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2024 American Time Use Survey. The figures do not establish that every member saves that amount or that every delivery replaces a store trip. Amazon provides the estimates and its stated calculation.

How Amazon says it makes deliveries faster

Amazon attributes speed to placing inventory closer to customers through demand forecasting, regionalized networks, local delivery hubs, and facilities that combine inventory and final-delivery functions. It also describes vehicles suited to different settings, pharmacy operations, and perishable-grocery delivery. Local stock can reduce distance or handoffs and make short delivery windows possible, but this is Amazon’s account of its operating model, not an independent assessment of its total costs or emissions. Amazon’s network explainer describes these elements.

Does faster delivery mean more emissions?

There is no simple answer that applies to every order. Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report says the company prioritizes lower-emission delivery methods “wherever possible,” while balancing speed, cost, reliability, and convenience. It estimates that U.S. Prime members’ consolidated deliveries in 2024 avoided 452 million deliveries, more than 494 million boxes, and 335,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO₂e). Amazon also describes using ocean and rail where feasible and offering shipping choices intended to improve routing. These are company estimates; the report does not isolate the emissions effect of same-day shipping or show that faster delivery itself lowers total emissions.

In December 2025, the Associated Press reported that expedited shipping can make efficient routing harder if trucks leave less full or drivers make repeated trips to the same neighborhood. AP quoted Sreedevi Rajagopalan, a research scientist at MIT’s Center for Transportation and Logistics, estimating that “for the same demand, fast shipping definitely increases emissions 10 to 12%.” That is her attributed estimate as reported by AP, not a universal rate for every retailer, region, package, or transport mode. The same article attributed to Rajagopalan estimates that delaying delivery by one to two days can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 36%, and a three- to four-day delay by 56%; those figures depend on the research and assumptions reported in the article and are not Amazon-specific measurements. AP’s report also says Amazon reported that customers who chose one delivery day for all items during the first nine months of 2025 avoided 100,000 tons of emissions and more than 300 million delivery stops.

Amazon’s sustainability director Chris Atkins told AP that the company’s scale and supply-chain efficiencies can support both faster service and better sustainability outcomes. That is Amazon’s position. The available figures do not settle the net emissions impact of fast versus standard delivery across products and locations.

How to decide whether to choose the earliest date

At checkout, compare the options against the need—not just the calendar. Availability varies by order and location.

  1. Ask whether the timing changes anything. If you need the item today or tomorrow, the speed may have a clear purpose. If not, a later date may be just as useful.
  2. Consider access and alternatives. A nearby shop, a distant store, or no practical local source can change the value of delivery.
  3. Check the real cost. Consider any applicable membership, delivery minimum, or other charge rather than treating “fast” or “free” as an automatic saving.
  4. Look for a later or combined option. When checkout offers a choice to combine eligible purchases or receive them on a later date, it may help consolidate deliveries. Amazon’s report and AP’s coverage describe consolidation and delayed delivery as possible ways to reduce delivery activity; neither guarantees a particular outcome for an individual order.
  5. Weigh reliability and convenience. A delivery promise only helps if it fits your plans and is met. Amazon itself identifies reliability and convenience as tradeoffs alongside speed and cost.

So, is record speed actually necessary?

Sometimes. It can solve a real problem for urgent essentials, time-sensitive orders, and customers with limited access to stores. But a record number of same- or next-day items does not mean that every one needed to arrive that quickly. For discretionary purchases, choose the earliest option only when the timing is worth something to you; otherwise, a later or consolidated delivery, if available, may better match both your needs and the goal of avoiding unnecessary delivery activity.
