The airline’s later firm order for 150 Airbus A220-300s is significant fleet context; it does not, on its own, confirm that the COMAC talks ended.
What is known about AirAsia’s C919 talks?
Channel NewsAsia reported on 3 October 2025, and updated its report on 6 November 2025, that AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes had confirmed advanced talks with COMAC to acquire narrow-body aircraft. The report connected the discussions with the C919 and described AirAsia as a possible first foreign airline customer. It did not report a signed contract, aircraft quantity, delivery timetable or confirmed date for entering service. Channel NewsAsia’s report is the basis for describing this as a potential deal, not a completed purchase.
That distinction matters: “first foreign customer” described what AirAsia might become if a deal went ahead. The available reporting does not establish that AirAsia placed an order or took delivery of a C919.
Does AirAsia’s A220 order mean it dropped the C919?
No conclusion about the COMAC talks follows from the A220 order alone. On 6 May 2026, Airbus announced a firm order from AirAsia for 150 A220-300 aircraft, making the airline a new A220 customer. This is a confirmed fleet commitment, but it does not establish whether AirAsia’s separate discussions with COMAC continued, ended or were suspended. Airbus’s announcement confirms the A220 order, not the outcome of the C919 talks.

What certification issue affects the C919?
The C919 is a Chinese-built single-aisle passenger aircraft. In November 2025, the Associated Press reported that it had not obtained the international certification needed to fly beyond China, and that approvals from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) could take years. That is a time-specific account of the status reported then; it does not establish the aircraft’s certification status on 7 October 2026. The Associated Press report provides the dated context.
A separate perspective came from Malaysia Aviation Group CEO Bryan Foong in a South China Morning Post interview published 13 July 2026. Speaking about his expectations, not announcing a regulator’s decision or AirAsia’s position, he said: “I have no doubt that Comac will eventually receive European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification – and hopefully with the [US] Federal Aviation Administration as well.” Foong said opportunities for his airline group could arise in 2035 or later; that timing was his view about Malaysia Aviation Group, not a forecast for AirAsia. How many C919s were in service in the cited fleet snapshot?
China Eastern Airlines reported operating 11 C919 aircraft as of 30 June 2025 in its interim filing, which also described the airline as the first user of the domestic C919 passenger aircraft. This is a dated snapshot, not a current 2026 fleet total. China Eastern’s investor-relations filings provide the figure.

The available reports do not establish whether AirAsia and COMAC later signed, cancelled or suspended a C919 deal. They also do not establish an FAA or EASA certification outcome as of 7 October 2026. The firm A220 order and the earlier reported talks are separate facts; neither resolves those open questions.
