No official retail price or launch date has been announced for either the PS6 or Microsoft’s Project Helix. The $999–$1,000 figures come from analysts, not Sony or Microsoft. One analyst says a $999 PS6 configuration is possible; another sees four-figure consoles becoming more common. Those are forecasts, and a separate model suggests a $1,000 launch could reduce adoption and related spending if its assumptions hold.
What analysts are forecasting—and what is confirmed
Kantan Games CEO Serkan Toto told GamesRadar that “$999 at least for one variant of the PS6 is not impossible.” The phrasing matters: he described a possibility for one configuration, not a confirmed price for every PS6 model. NYU video games professor and industry researcher Joost van Dreunen told the same outlet that “we’re quickly moving towards a world in which a $1,000 console will be the norm, and console gaming will become a luxury expenditure.” That is his broader industry view, not a Sony or Microsoft announcement.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella cautioned in the GamesRadar interview that current market conditions do not allow for much certainty in the hardware market. On timing and price, he said $1,000-plus pricing was possible, as were launches in 2027 or 2028—or later. The comments are best read as a range of analyst opinions, not a consensus forecast. None establishes the PS6 or Project Helix’s final price, configuration, or release date. GamesRadar, March 31, 2026
What the $1,000 scenario would mean for sales
Ampere Analysis modeled one specific case: Sony and Microsoft launch conventionally designed consoles with incremental hardware improvements in 2028, each priced at $1,000. In that scenario, combined PS6 and Project Helix sales over their first five years could be up to 38% below the combined first-five-year sales of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Ampere also estimated that the PlayStation and Xbox games-and-services market could be $3.4 billion, or 12%, smaller by 2031 than in its comparison scenario with $700 launch prices. These are modeled outcomes reported by VGC—not observed losses, guaranteed results, or general rules about what a higher price does to sales. The comparison depends on the assumed 2028 launch, conventional incremental hardware design, and $700 alternative. VGC, August 19, 2026
How the current price context compares
VGC’s August 2026 report put the PS5 Pro at $900 in the US, up from its $700 launch price. That is a dated US comparison, not a worldwide price quote or evidence of what the next generation will cost. It helps explain why analysts are considering four-figure scenarios, but it does not establish a PS6 starting price.

For personal budgeting, the key distinction is between an analyst scenario and an amount you can plan around. Until manufacturers announce prices and configurations, treating $1,000 as a confirmed expense—or assuming a lower figure—is premature. The eventual cost could also depend on which configuration a buyer wants.
Why a next-generation console might cost more
Analyst comments in the coverage point to several possible sources of pricing pressure, including tariffs, component costs, AI data-center demand for hardware, and supply or distribution conditions in parts of Asia. These are proposed factors, not a confirmed explanation for any future console price.

Van Dreunen told GamesRadar that DRAM and NAND prices had risen 80–90% since the start of 2026. That is his attributed statement as quoted by the outlet; it is not independently corroborated here, and it does not show how much any particular console’s manufacturing cost would change. Memory is only one part of a console’s overall cost, and the cited figure alone cannot predict a retail price.

Ampere’s analysis, as summarized by VGC, described several ways companies could reduce the risk of a four-figure launch. They are possible strategies, not announced Sony or Microsoft plans.

- Delay the launch: A later generation could give component costs time to fall, though no particular delay or price outcome is established.
- Keep a 2028 window but change the economics: Greater hardware subsidies or different monetization and sales strategies could reduce the upfront price while shifting how a company earns money.
- Change the hardware proposition: A different form or use case, rather than an incremental graphics-focused upgrade, could alter the product and its pricing strategy.
VGC also reported Xbox CEO Asha Sharma saying it would be hard to imagine mass audiences affording thousands of dollars across a console generation and that radically different business models could emerge. Her statement describes possible industry changes; it does not confirm Project Helix’s price or business model. VGC’s account of Sharma’s comments
What to watch before setting a console budget
The forecasts will become more useful only as the unknowns resolve: actual component costs nearer launch, final hardware choices, company pricing and subsidy strategies, and release timing. Until Sony and Microsoft provide product details and retail prices, the most defensible conclusion is that $1,000 is a plausible analyst scenario—not an announced price or a settled new norm.
