What has Bill Gates said about flying privately?
In a February 2025 interview with The Washington Post, Gates said, “I fly on a private jet.” That is direct evidence that he flies privately, but he did not identify a plane model or say how many aircraft he owns.
Which aircraft have been associated with him?
Public accounts have linked Gates to a Gulfstream G650 or G650ER, but the reporting is inconsistent and does not provide a verified current inventory. A commercial aviation explainer published in October 2026 describes conflicting reports, including claims about multiple aircraft and a later statement from Gates’s office that he owns one Gulfstream. That summary is useful context, not a direct ownership record. Its aircraft image is explicitly illustrative, not a depiction of Gates’s plane (CRAFT).
A tracking page lists a Gulfstream G650, registration N887GV, and a C208, registration N897GV, as aircraft attributed to Gates. The same page identifies MENTE LLC as the registered owner and cautions that attribution can be based on media or registry information. It also says aircraft data cannot establish who is aboard a particular flight (PrivJet). These records should therefore be described as aircraft attributed to Gates, not as confirmed personal possessions or a reliable list of his travel.

How many private aircraft does he own?
The sources reviewed do not establish an exact current count. CBS News reported in 2023 that an aircraft charter broker had claimed Gates had four jets, a seaplane and a helicopter, but CBS said it could not confirm the claim. The broker’s figure should not be presented as fact (CBS News).
The differing claims illustrate why an attributed registration, an older report or a broker’s estimate cannot settle the question. The evidence supports saying that Gates flies privately and has been associated in public reporting with a Gulfstream G650-family aircraft; it does not support a definitive current collection roster.

What has Gates said about the climate criticism?
In a 2023 BBC interview reported by CBS News, Gates defended private flying as a way to reach places for Foundation work, asking, “Should I stay at home and not come to Kenya and learn about farming and malaria?” He also pointed to his support for climate innovation and direct air capture, saying he funded Climeworks and that his spending on climate innovation exceeded his family’s carbon footprint.
Those are Gates’s stated reasons for flying, not independent evidence that private travel is climate-neutral. CBS’s account also discusses limits to direct-air-capture deployment and the importance of reducing fossil-fuel use. Funding climate technology and emissions from flying are distinct issues; the statements cited here do not establish that one cancels out the other.

- A definitive current list of aircraft Gates owns or personally uses.
- Proof that he owns each aircraft attributed to him by a tracker or media report.
- Proof that Gates booked, took or was aboard any particular tracked flight.
