Tesla’s Reported Robotaxi Analysis Forecast Years of Losses. Musk Reportedly Rejected It

The reported Tesla analysis saw years of possible Robotaxi losses alongside a potentially larger lifetime fare stream. Here’s what was modeled, what Musk reportedly decided, and what public disclosures establish.

According to reporting by The Information, Tesla executives’ internal analysis found the Robotaxi business could lose money for at least a few years. The report also said the model projected that Tesla might eventually collect more in fare share over a Robotaxi’s lifetime than it earns from selling a conventional electric car. Those are reported projections—not a public Tesla forecast, audited results, or proof of what the service will earn.

What the internal analysis reportedly concluded

The Information reported that Tesla’s analysis saw difficult near-term economics for Robotaxi, even while modeling a potentially larger long-term revenue stream from fares. The analysis was not made public. Detailed figures are available here through Electrek’s account of The Information’s reporting, rather than a released Tesla model.

The distinction between revenue and profit matters. The reported model estimated that a Robotaxi could sell for $20,000 to $25,000 and that Tesla might receive up to three times that amount over the vehicle’s lifetime through its share of fares. That is a modeled gross fare-share amount, not profit. The reporting says the analysis accounted for capital spending and operating expenses, including charging stations and parking depots, but the complete cost model and margin calculations are not available. Electrek’s July 2025 account summarizes these reported assumptions.

How the model reportedly sized the market

The reported analysis considered individual buyers and fleet operators, ride-sharing, people giving up car ownership, Tesla’s share of fares, competition, costs, and regulatory conditions in different countries. Its market estimates depended heavily on how much more a Robotaxi would be used than a privately owned car.

Reported figure What it represents
Five times conventional-car utilization A high-utilization assumption in the reported analysis, not a measured fleet result. (Electrek, reporting on The Information, 2025.)
15 million falling to roughly 3 million vehicles a year The reported estimate of annual U.S. vehicle demand under that utilization assumption. (Electrek, reporting on The Information, 2025.)
About 1 million self-driving vehicles a year The potential market after the analysis reportedly adjusted for consumers who would not switch. (Electrek, reporting on The Information, 2025.)
Roughly 600,000 vehicles The annual U.S. Tesla sales the analysis reportedly judged difficult for Robotaxi to replace. This is a reported assessment, not a published Tesla sales target. (Electrek, reporting on The Information, 2025.)

These figures are outputs of a reported scenario, not observed changes in vehicle demand. The available account does not provide sensitivity tables showing how the estimates would change with lower utilization, different adoption rates, or other assumptions.

What Musk reportedly decided

The Information’s account said senior Tesla executives argued for pursuing both Robotaxi and a lower-priced, driveable car. Musk reportedly rejected their analysis, approved the Cybercab, and dropped the planned $25,000 EV in favor of less expensive versions of the Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla has not publicly confirmed the reported internal debate or the model behind it.

  • Gift selection for toy cars for boys aged 3-12: This gift is suitable for children aged 3 and above and is a collectible for car enthusiasts.

In October 2024, Musk said of a regular $25,000 model: “I think having a regular $25,000 model is pointless. Yeah. It would be silly. Like, it’ll be completely at odds with what we believe,” as quoted by Electrek. The remark shows his public position on that car; it does not independently verify what executives presented internally or why the decision was made.

Electrek also quoted Rohan Patel, identified in its report as Tesla’s head of business development and policy, describing the economics this way: “We had lots of modeling that showed the payback around FSD [Full Self Driving] and Robotaxi was going to be slow. It was going to be choppy. It was going to be very, very hard outside of the U.S., given the regulatory environment or lack of regulatory environment.” An unnamed source familiar with the analysis added: “There is ultimately a saturation of people who want to be ferried around in somebody else’s car.” That is the source’s view, not a disclosed finding with a quantified saturation estimate.

What Tesla’s later disclosures show—and don’t show

Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q says its Robotaxi service launched in June 2025 and that Cybercab production began in the first half of 2026. The filing describes supporting infrastructure for cleaning, maintenance, charging, security, teleoperations, and fleet management, and says Tesla will work to improve safety and profitability as it scales. It does not report Robotaxi segment profitability or confirm the internal forecast described in the earlier reporting. Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q is the company’s public account of the program.

Scale remains a separate question from profitability. TechCrunch reported in July 2026 that paid Robotaxi miles fell from approximately 1.1 million in Q1 2026 to 700,000 in Q2, a roughly 36% quarter-to-quarter decline, despite expansion into cities in Texas and Florida. The mileage figures describe reported usage; they do not reveal fare revenue, costs, or profit per mile. TechCrunch also quoted Musk saying Tesla needed Cybercab-specific driving data before putting many of the vehicles on roads. TechCrunch’s July 2026 report provides that usage context.

How to read the reported forecast as an investor or customer

  • Treat it as a reported internal forecast. It is not an audited loss, a public Tesla earnings projection, or a confirmed result.
  • Separate lifetime fare revenue from profit. A large cumulative fare share would still need to cover vehicle, operating, and infrastructure costs.
  • Watch the assumptions behind market size. The reported estimates depend on utilization, adoption, competition, and regulatory access—not simply the number of vehicles Tesla can build.
  • Look for comparable public operating results. Tesla’s filing confirms rollout and production, but does not disclose Robotaxi profitability; paid-mile estimates are usage indicators, not unit economics.
