What American Airlines charges for checked bags
For tickets issued on or after May 18, 2026, American lists the following fees for travel within or between the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Caribbean destinations other than Cuba and Haiti, Mexico, Central America other than Panama, and Guyana. The fees are per person, each way.

How to find the fee for your trip
- Identify the route region. Use the origin and destination to find the matching row in American’s fee table. Do not assume the regional example above applies to every international flight.
- Check when the ticket was issued. The applicable schedule can depend on the ticket purchase date, and some route or fare entries have different effective dates.
- Check the fare and cabin. Basic Economy may have a different charge or destination-specific free-bag rule.
- Count the checked bags and compare payment options. Fees apply each way, and online prepayment discounts are available only on eligible itineraries.
- Check benefits and operating carriers. Status, an eligible card, premium-cabin travel, military eligibility, or a partner-operated segment may change the allowance. Confirm the rules for every flight on the itinerary.
For eligible American-marketed and operated itineraries, American says you can pay for bags online up to two hours before departure and save on the first and second checked bags. Does Basic Economy include a free checked bag?
Usually, no: Basic Economy does not generally include a free checked bag. However, American publishes exceptions by destination and ticket issue date. Its Basic Economy rules distinguish Australia and New Zealand from travel to or from Asia, India, and Qatar; some tickets to or from the latter destinations issued on or after April 23, 2026 include one free checked bag. - Eligible AAdvantage cardmembers: Most receive a first checked bag free on eligible domestic American Airlines itineraries. The benefit is not a blanket free-bag rule for every route or flight.
- Premium-cabin travelers: Premium-cabin tickets may include a complimentary checked-bag allowance; confirm the allowance for the specific cabin and itinerary.
- Active-duty U.S. military personnel: American provides complimentary-bag benefits under stated conditions. Consult its policy for the applicable travel purpose and allowance.

What online payment changes—and what it does not
Prepaying online can lower the first- and second-bag fees on eligible itineraries, but it does not make the fee refundable. American says airport-paid baggage fees are nonrefundable. It also says that if you later buy or receive an upgrade that includes free checked bags, fees already paid will not be refunded.
