Aaron Krause’s Scrub Daddy started as a scrubber for mechanics and auto body shops, not as a kitchen sponge. In a 2015 interview with Tech Times, Krause described how it moved from his automotive-products business into household cleaning—and separately explained the Ion Belt, a wearable phone-charging concept that was then being promoted on Kickstarter.
How Scrub Daddy began as a tool for mechanics
Krause told Tech Times that he created the original scrubber to clean mechanics’ hands. Its story was linked to his earlier work in automotive detailing: after damaging a car while detailing, he developed the Edge buffing pad and built a business around buffing pads.
In 2008, 3M bought Krause’s buffing-pad operation, according to the interview. Krause said Scrub Daddy and several other accessory products were not part of that sale. The scrubber then sat in storage before he began trying it for household cleaning.
How the scrubber became Scrub Daddy
Krause recounted trying the scrubber while cleaning outdoor furniture, then experimenting with it in the kitchen. As he considered how it could clean silverware, he came up with its smiley-face shape. The interview presents this change in use and design as part of the path from a mechanics’ scrubber to a kitchen product.

Tech Times reported that ABC’s Shark Tank investment of $200,000 had occurred in 2012. In the same 2015 article, Krause said Scrub Daddy had reached more than $75 million in retail sales by the time of the interview. Those are historical figures from the article, not current investment or sales totals.
What the Ion Belt was
The Ion Belt was a separate concept: a belt designed to carry embedded batteries and charge a phone through a USB output. Krause described battery indicator lights and a buckle connector used to recharge the belt. Tech Times reported a 3,000 mAh battery capacity in 2015.
Krause said repeated bending caused internal wires to break in early prototypes. He described a partner’s encapsulation approach as a way to address that durability problem. The article reported that the Kickstarter campaign had raised $45,411 toward a $50,000 goal, with nine days remaining, as of December 2, 2015. That snapshot does not establish whether the belt later shipped or is available today.
What Krause said about Ion Belt safety concerns
In the interview, Krause addressed concerns about airport security and radiation, saying: “The majority of the problem is the misunderstanding that this is not safe or that it’s not going to let you through airport security or it’s going to radiate your body. None of these are true.” This is Krause’s statement in a 2015 interview, not an independent safety assessment.

What the interview establishes—and what it does not
The Tech Times profile is a historical account based on an interview with Krause. It documents his explanation of Scrub Daddy’s origins, the sale of his buffing-pad business, and the Ion Belt’s design and crowdfunding status at the time. It does not establish present-day Ion Belt availability or provide independent testing of either product.
