Bolt Flight reported that aircraft N718AN departed Los Angeles on December 7. American later confirmed that its first retrofitted 777-300ER entered commercial service on September 2, 2026, on a New York–Buenos Aires flight.
What happened to the first aircraft?
Bolt Flight reported on December 10, 2025, that American Airlines sent Boeing 777-300ER N718AN from Los Angeles to Hong Kong on December 7 to begin cabin retrofit work. Its report expected the aircraft to remain there until spring 2026; that was an estimate, not an official American schedule. Bolt Flight’s report is the source for the registration, ferry date and destination.
American’s later newsroom announcement confirmed that its first retrofitted 777-300ER had entered service, but did not confirm N718AN’s ferry flight, the Hong Kong stop, or which contractor or worksite performed the retrofit. Hong Kong has a role in aircraft cabin work: Cathay Pacific said its own retrofitted 777-300ER was unveiled at a HAECO hangar at Hong Kong International Airport in October 2024. That separate project does not establish who worked on American’s aircraft. Cathay Pacific’s announcement describes its own retrofit.
When did the retrofitted 777-300ER enter service?
American said the aircraft’s first commercial flight was New York (JFK) to Buenos Aires (EZE) on September 2, 2026. The airline describes its 777-300ER fleet as 20 aircraft, used on long-haul markets that include London, Tokyo, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Sydney. The announcement does not mean every flight on those routes has the updated cabin: aircraft assignments can change. American’s newsroom announcement provides the service date, fleet information and cabin details.

What changes in the renovated cabin?
Flagship Suites
The announced configuration has 70 Flagship Suite seats. American highlights privacy doors, additional personal storage and a chaise lounge seating position. The airline’s announcement presents the suites as part of its redesigned premium cabin.
Premium Economy
The aircraft has 44 Premium Economy seats. American lists sculpted headrests, adjustable calf and foot rests, enhanced storage, wireless charging, water-bottle storage, and USB-C and AC power among the additions.
Rank #2
Main Cabin Extra and total capacity
The announcement also lists 30 Main Cabin Extra seats and calls the 70 Flagship Suites, 44 Premium Economy seats and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats a total of 144 premium seats. It does not state the aircraft’s overall seat count. Bolt Flight reported 216 economy seats and 330 seats total after the retrofit, compared with 304 before; those totals should be attributed to that report rather than treated as figures confirmed in American’s announcement.
How to check whether your flight has the new cabin
- Open the specific flight in American’s booking or trip-management channel and review the aircraft and seat map shown for that departure.
- Look for the updated 777-300ER cabin and seat layout rather than relying only on the route name. American lists several long-haul markets for this fleet, but does not promise that every flight on those routes will use a retrofitted aircraft.
- Check again closer to departure if the cabin matters to your choice. Aircraft assignments can change, so a route or an earlier schedule is not a guarantee of the final aircraft.
What happens to Flagship First?
American said Flagship First would no longer be available for purchase on 777-300ER flights beginning November 19, 2026. For transcontinental routes, it gave March 28, 2027, as the date. These are sales-availability dates stated by the airline, not a claim that every route or aircraft changes configuration on the same day.
