American Airlines published a Heathrow travel exception after a September 8, 2026, UK air traffic control disruption, but the available notice does not establish how many AA flights were canceled—or when individual passengers were notified. NATS, the UK air navigation service provider, traced the disruption to a software defect in its flight-data system, not an aircraft problem. The incident led to restrictions across UK airspace and widespread delays and cancellations.
Why were American Airlines flights to London disrupted?
The trigger was a defect in a specific part of NATS’s National Airspace System flight-data system. In its September 18 preliminary report, NATS said a manually requested aircraft code was paused by a higher-priority message and then resumed incorrectly. Controllers use those codes to identify flights on radar. When the system’s information was reduced, NATS imposed restrictions as a safety measure.
The fault directly affected flights managed by the London Area Control centre, mainly higher-level flights above 24,500 feet. NATS says it extended restrictions across the UK to restart the system and reload flight data. The restrictions lasted about six hours, and NATS operations returned to normal that evening; clearing the resulting passenger-disruption backlog took more than two days. NATS said the incident was not caused by military intervention and was unrelated to the major August 2023 outage.
NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe described it as “a software issue in a specific part of our flight data system, that we have traced to a small subsection of coding.” NATS also said that restrictions were imposed to maintain safety; its statement that safety was not in question should be understood in that context.

Were American Airlines flights to Heathrow canceled?
American Airlines issued a travel-agency exception notice for London Heathrow (LHR), covering qualifying itineraries with affected travel dates of September 8–9, 2026. The notice applied to tickets issued on or before September 8 and set out rebooking conditions, including same-cabin inventory and routing rules. It also covered certain joint-business and codeshare itineraries. The AA notice confirms that the airline addressed Heathrow travel affected by the air traffic control disruption, but it is not a flight manifest: it does not say how many American Airlines flights were canceled or establish that every itinerary covered was canceled.
The exception listed new travel dates of September 9–11, 2026. It was a limited waiver for that disruption, not a standing exception for later travel. For an individual flight, check the current itinerary and status with American Airlines.

How large was the disruption?
Published figures describe UK-wide disruption, not American Airlines cancellations. They also count different things, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

The CAA announced an independent review on September 25. At that time, it said an initial report was due by the end of January 2027 and a final report by March 8, 2027; those were planned publication dates, not completed findings.

What should you do if your American Airlines flight was canceled?
- Check your specific flight. Review your American Airlines itinerary and current flight status, and follow the airline’s instructions for your booking. A general Heathrow disruption notice cannot confirm what happened to a particular flight.
- Use AA’s rebooking or customer-service channels. American’s customer service plan says it will rebook customers on its next available flight after a cancellation. If no AA flight is available until the next day, it may use a partner airline.
- If you decline the rebooking, ask about a refund. AA’s plan says customers who decline rebooking after a significant disruption may request a refund of the remaining ticket value and related optional fees. The plan’s hotel, transport and meal provisions depend on the cause of the disruption, so do not assume they apply in every NATS-related case.
- Check passenger rights for your exact route and carrier. The CAA says passengers whose flights are canceled must be offered a refund or rerouting, and delayed passengers should receive appropriate care. The rules that apply depend on the itinerary: assimilated Regulation 261/2004 applies to UK departures and arrivals on UK and EU carriers, while different rights may apply to UK arrivals operated by non-EU carriers such as US airlines.
The CAA considered compensation unlikely when a cancellation or delay was directly caused by the NATS incident, but said airlines should still look after passengers. Compensation is separate from the duties to offer a refund or rerouting and to provide appropriate care. The CAA’s passenger-rights guidance is not a decision on any individual claim; check current guidance for your itinerary and contact the airline if you need a case-specific answer.
