Amazon Invests $5 Billion More in Anthropic as AWS Ties Deepen

Amazon’s new $5 billion Anthropic investment is part of a larger AWS deal: more than $100 billion in planned spending over ten years and up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity.

Amazon announced a new $5 billion investment in Anthropic on April 20, 2026, alongside a broader agreement that ties possible additional funding to Anthropic’s use of AWS infrastructure. Anthropic committed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS technologies over ten years and can secure up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity. Amazon said another $20 billion in investment is possible if commercial milestones are met; it is not guaranteed.

What Amazon and Anthropic agreed to

The arrangement combines investment, cloud spending and computing capacity rather than amounting to a cash investment alone. Amazon’s announcement says its new $5 billion investment is additional to the $8 billion it had previously invested. The deal also allows for up to $20 billion more if Anthropic meets commercial milestones. The companies have not disclosed the full contract terms, an ownership percentage resulting from the investment, or any governance rights. Amazon’s announcement and Anthropic’s announcement describe the terms.

Element What was announced
Amazon investment $5 billion immediately, plus up to $20 billion more if commercial milestones are met. Amazon said it had previously invested $8 billion.
AWS spending Anthropic committed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS technologies over ten years.
Compute capacity Anthropic can secure up to 5 gigawatts of capacity for training and deploying Claude.
Infrastructure The companies named Trainium2, Trainium3, future Trainium generations and Graviton CPUs as part of the relationship.

The Associated Press separately reported the main investment and spending terms, including Amazon’s prior $8 billion investment. Its report provides an independent check on those headline figures.

Why the deal matters to both companies

For Anthropic, the agreement is intended to expand the computing resources available to train and serve Claude as demand grows. Anthropic said it was using more than one million Trainium2 chips for that work. It also reported run-rate revenue above $30 billion, compared with about $9 billion at the end of 2025. That is a company-reported run rate, not audited annual revenue. Anthropic’s announcement gives those figures.

For Amazon, the deal strengthens the role of AWS and its custom chips in Anthropic’s infrastructure. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the chips offer “high performance at significantly lower cost for customers”; that is Amazon’s stated rationale, not an independent performance assessment. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the company needs more infrastructure to keep pace with growing demand.

The commercial relationship can benefit each side in different ways: Anthropic secures a path to large-scale compute, while Amazon gains a major cloud customer and supports Claude access within AWS. The announced figures do not establish the deal’s financial return for Amazon or whether its terms are economically favorable.

What the compute timeline does—and does not—say

Anthropic said new Trainium2 capacity was expected in the first half of 2026, with nearly 1 gigawatt of Trainium2 and Trainium3 capacity expected by the end of 2026. These were company projections in the April 2026 announcements, not confirmation that the capacity was delivered on schedule. The announcements do not establish that all of the possible 5 gigawatts will be built or when each portion will become available.

How AWS customers can access Claude

The companies described two AWS-related routes: Claude models through Amazon Bedrock and Anthropic’s native Claude console through Claude Platform on AWS. Anthropic said the native platform would use the same AWS account, controls and billing, and initially described it as “coming soon.” Availability depends on the model and service: AWS announced Claude Opus 5.5 on Bedrock and Claude Platform on AWS on September 22, 2026. That announcement does not mean every Claude feature is identical across access routes. AWS’s availability notice identifies those services.

What is still undisclosed

The public announcements do not provide the investment’s resulting ownership share, Amazon’s governance rights, or the complete contract. They also do not establish the ultimate financial return, the competitive effect of the agreement, or whether projected capacity will arrive on schedule. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the investment and spending headlines alone.
