Eligible consumers do not need to file a new claim: payments are automatic, and the FTC says they should arrive by April 2027. Qualification depends on how a person enrolled or tried to cancel and how many Prime benefits they used.
What the $1 billion settlement means for shoppers
The full settlement is $2.5 billion: a $1 billion civil penalty and up to $1.5 billion in consumer redress, according to the FTC’s September 2025 announcement. The FTC estimated that 35 million consumers were affected; that estimate is not the number who will receive payments.

The FTC alleged that Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime without their knowledge or consent and made cancellation difficult. The settlement resolves the case; those allegations should not be mistaken for findings after a trial. It also requires Amazon to provide a clear way to decline Prime, disclose material subscription terms such as price, charge timing and auto-renewal, and simplify cancellation.
Who may qualify for a refund
The FTC’s current refund guidance says a person may qualify if all of these conditions apply:

- After enrolling, they used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12-month period.
The challenged enrollment flows named by the FTC are the universal Prime decision page, the shipping selection page, single-page checkout, and the Prime Video enrollment flow. The FTC says Prime Music and Prime Video products offered free to subscribers count as benefits.
Why some older eligibility descriptions differ
The settlement’s original payment rules were narrower. The revised terms expanded the benefit-use threshold to include qualifying customers who used 11–20 benefits in a 12-month period. The current FTC page reflects the revised threshold; older notices or articles may describe the earlier rules.

Do you need to apply?
No. Under the revised process, eligible consumers do not need to submit a new claim, respond to a notice, or complete a form. The FTC says payments are automatic, by mailed check or electronically through PayPal or Venmo. The FTC’s January 2026 consumer FAQ also addresses people who already submitted a claim form.
The FTC says payments should be received by April 2027. An issued payment expires 60 days after it is sent, so follow the instructions accompanying the actual check or electronic payment promptly.

How much might an eligible customer receive?
The individual payment cap may reach $200 across payment phases, but that is not a guaranteed amount. Earlier payments were capped at $51. Revised terms allow up to $149 in additional payments if consumer-accepted payments have not reached the specified threshold by February 2027. The additional amount is conditional, and some people may receive less than the maximum.
The FTC reported more than $845 million in refunds issued by September 2026. Issued money is not necessarily money accepted or deposited by consumers. Separately, the revised court order reports that by December 22, 2025, Amazon had issued more than 12.5 million automatic payments totaling over $406 million. These are figures from different reporting dates and should not be added together.

The order also describes possible pro-rata payments beginning by the end of April 2027 if accepted payments remain below $1 billion. That is a conditional future step, not a completed or guaranteed payment. The order records that issuance to some people eligible under the claims process began by August 30, 2026, and that payments for customers qualifying under the expanded 11–20-benefit threshold began October 1, 2026.

How to recognize refund scams
The FTC says it is not contacting consumers about these refunds. Neither the FTC nor Amazon will ask you to pay money to release a settlement payment. Treat unexpected messages promising a refund with caution, do not pay a fee, and use the administrator contact information on the FTC page rather than links in unsolicited messages.
