What was the documentary’s opening-weekend gross?
The Associated Press reported a studio estimate of about $7 million for the film’s opening weekend, while TechCrunch reported a Sunday estimate of $7.04 million. Those were contemporaneous estimates published February 1, 2026. Box Office Mojo’s release listing, accessed October 7, 2026, gives an opening gross of $7,161,605. The database figure is more precise, but it should not be mistaken for the rounded estimate originally reported in the headline.

The film opened January 30, 2026, in 1,778 theaters, according to the Associated Press. Box Office Mojo lists its theatrical release period as January 30 to March 6, 2026. Its weekend listing supplies the $7,161,605 opening figure.
Was a $7 million opening strong for a documentary?
It was notable within the category: the Associated Press described it as the best documentary opening in 14 years outside concert films. That qualification matters. Concert films are excluded from the comparison, and documentary rankings are not the same as comparisons with all theatrical releases.

The opening also exceeded the $3 million to $5 million range of estimates cited before the weekend by the Associated Press. That comparison is between pre-weekend projections and the reported opening estimate, not a guarantee of the film’s overall financial success.
Does the opening mean the film made a profit?
No. The Associated Press reported that Amazon MGM Studios paid $40 million for the rights and spent about $35 million on marketing. Those reported figures help explain the scale of the investment, but they cannot be directly compared with opening-weekend ticket sales to establish profit or loss.

Box-office gross is not the same as the amount a studio receives, and the opening weekend is only one part of a film’s financial picture. The reported rights and marketing figures do not, by themselves, account for theatrical revenue arrangements, other costs, or later distribution income. The available figures therefore do not establish whether the film was profitable.

Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of domestic theatrical distribution, called the weekend “an important first step in what we see as a long-tail lifecycle for both the film and the forthcoming docu-series,” in comments reported by TechCrunch on February 1, 2026. That was the distributor’s framing of the release, rather than an independent assessment of its financial performance.

Amazon later said the film had grossed more than $16.6 million in its theatrical run and announced that it would debut on Prime Video on March 9, 2026. That full-run figure is distinct from the opening-weekend gross. The official Amazon announcement provides the later theatrical total and streaming date.
