Jio now describes the app as a hub for payments, banking, loans, insurance, investments and financial tracking. That broad pitch marks an opening move—not proof that Jio has won customers or market share from established rivals.
What is JioFinance?
JioFinance is a digital financial-services app from Jio Financial Services (JFS), the financial-services company that demerged from Reliance Industries and listed in 2023. TechCrunch reported at the time that Reliance retained more than 80% ownership of JFS. The app puts several financial functions under one interface rather than focusing only on peer-to-peer payments.
JFS Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani described the company’s ambition in its FY2023-24 annual report: “Jio Financial Services is uniquely placed to enable financial inclusion in India, leveraging technology to make financial products simple, affordable, and accessible to all.” That is the company’s stated goal, not an independent assessment of outcomes.
When did JioFinance launch?
JioFinance entered beta on May 30, 2024. In its launch coverage, TechCrunch reported that the planned offer included UPI payments, loans and insurance. At that stage, the app allowed users to open a digital account with Jio Payments Bank; lending and credit backed by collateral such as mutual funds were described as expected offerings, not necessarily services already live at launch.

The launch announcement also positioned JioFinance within JFS’s broader plans. TechCrunch reported a BlackRock partnership for wealth and asset management and said JFS was using alternative-data models to personalize offerings. Those announcements do not establish that a particular investment product was available in the app or that customers achieved specific results. Reliance called the launch a “significant step forward” in its “digital transformation journey to enhance financial well-being of every Indian,” a company statement carried in the article.
What services does JioFinance offer?
Jio’s current product page advertises a wider set of features than the initial launch description. The listed range includes:

- Payments: UPI payments and bill payments. Jio also claims international UPI use in India, the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and France; acceptance and transaction conditions may vary by merchant and location.
- Banking: a Jio Payments Bank zero-balance savings account and Platinum debit card.
- Loans: loans against mutual funds or property, home loans and corporate loans.
- Insurance: car, bike, term-life and health insurance.
- Investments: investment goals and JioGold.
- Money tracking: My Money, which Jio says can track spending, earnings and savings and link bank accounts through the account-aggregator framework.
These are features Jio advertises, not a guarantee that every product is available to every user. Eligibility, availability, rates, charges, limits and terms depend on the relevant product disclosures and can change. Check those disclosures before opening an account, borrowing, buying insurance or investing.
Jio’s FAQ says users can sign up with a mobile number from Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL or another authorised Indian telecom provider. The company’s claim about international UPI should not be read as assurance that every transaction will work at every merchant in the named countries.

How many people use JioFinance?
JFS’s FY2024-25 annual-report search excerpt says the JioFinance app crossed 4 million downloads. The same excerpt reports more than 8 million monthly active users across all of JFS’s digital properties in March 2025. That MAU figure covers the group’s digital properties, not JioFinance alone, so it cannot be used as the app’s monthly-user count. The annual-report PDF was not directly retrievable, so these figures should be treated as attributed company-report figures rather than independently verified measurements.

At launch, coverage described a crowded Indian fintech market. TechCrunch named Google and PhonePe among the major digital competitors, while The Economic Times identified Paytm and PhonePe as direct competitors. These reports establish the competitive context, not JioFinance’s market position or a later market-share result.

A useful comparison with Paytm or PhonePe depends on the specific service a person needs. Compare like with like rather than treating a broad feature list as proof of equivalence:
- Which services are actually available to you, and what eligibility rules apply?
- How do UPI and bill-payment functions, limits and charges compare?
- For banking, lending, insurance or investments, what are the product terms, rates and fees?
- Are user figures measured over the same period and defined consistently—for example, downloads versus monthly active users?
- What customer support and protections apply to the transaction or financial product in question?
The launch coverage and Jio’s product page do not provide a like-for-like comparison of current terms, market shares or independently verified customer outcomes. A wider menu in one app is not, by itself, evidence that it is cheaper, safer or better suited to a particular user.
